Join us as we set off on a day-long expedition, with our initial destination being the stunning Balos beach. Nestled on the furthest edge of the Gramvoussa peninsula, this lagoon boasts unparalleled natural beauty and marks Crete’s most westerly point. Recognised and shielded under the Natura 2000 programme, we are committed to prioritising its conservation. After a rejuvenating dip in the crystal-clear waters of Balos and Gramvoussa island, leaving nothing behind but our footsteps on the pink-tinted sands, we move on to Menies.
This concealed bay is perched on the northeastern coastline of the Rodopou peninsula, just across from Gramvoussa. Menies is home to the historical site of Diktynna, once a site of worship for the goddess Vritomartis, who is often associated with Artemis. Following a invigorating swim on its pebbly shores, we navigate back along the coast towards Chania.
We seize the chance to make a brief halt near Thodorou island, a protected sanctuary for the endangered native Cretan goat, also known by the friendly nickname ‘kri-kri’.
