The island serves as a protected natural sanctuary, distinguished by its inherent natural beauty and the Natura area on opposite coasts. The shape of Elafonisi beach varies depending on the prevalent weather conditions during the winter months. Therefore, a consecutive two-year visit may reveal a change in water levels which can either make one swim to get to Elafonisi or merely walk there, and this can change in reverse order.
Separated from the mainland by a shallow and slender 150-meter strait, the island sits opposite an alluvial plain. The island’s western end elevates more, comprising containly limestones, while its eastern end descends, being sandy with sandstones covered by sandy dunes. These dunes are laden with halophitic vegetation. The island is recognized for its dunes featuring growth of the Ammophila arenaria species and a vast presence of sea lilies.
