The welcoming captain and... - The welcoming captain and crew made the tour both educational and relaxing. Historic, high interest, neighboring ship activity on the water, and aquatic wonders were professionally pointed out during the commentary. The comfortable deck with chairs and food items for purchase encouraged me to view the sights from the deck even though it was a bit chilly.

An Excellent "Not 4 Hour Tour" of Charleston Harbor - An excellent 2 hour tour of Charleston Harbor. As the Captain announced upon departing, they purposely avoid the "4 hour Tour" fate of Gilligan, the Skipper, Mary Ann and the other guests from Gilligan's Island. Our captain was quite an excellent narrator and quite a comedian. The boat, the Carolina Belle, was very clean and comfortable. As February was still quite chilly, we sat indoors on the main deck, though many braved the cool temps on the outdoor upper deck. The cruise circles Charleston Harbor in a counter-clockwise direction, so sitting on the starboard side (right side facing front of the boat) of the boat is best. The 2 hour tour was the prefect length, we saw all the attractions of Charleston Harbor including Bill Murray's Ghostbusters house which was very impressive, but which he lost in a divorce. Nearing the end of the cruise, the captain pulls under the large suspension bridge and blows the boat's signal horns which re-verb on the cables of the bridge, was very cool. Highly recommend this "2 Hour Tour". Sorry, forgot to take pictures.

A Civics Journey on the High Seas! - The 90-minute harbor cruise was insightful and entertaining. Boarding started at 11:15 for the 11:30 start time. There were roughly 25 people on our excursion, so there was ample space to move around. Boarding requires climbing a ramp to the second floor and taking a staircase down to be in the indoors. One woman, with a cane, managed well, but this could be a bit challenging depending on the severity of the mobility impairment. Our captain gave a brief introduction to the crew and then discussed his biography, which brought him to Charleston from the West Coast. The trip begins with discussing the history of piracy related to Charleston. Helpfully, the captain said that more of what would be discussed was on the Starboard side, so people quickly shifted over there. The chairs were moveable and there were some tables that you could use for the drinks and chips, available for purchase on the upper deck. I stayed at the stern of the boat which allowed me to watch the numerous sea birds trailing our journey. We passed by a few church spires while learning about the naming of “Charlestown” from Charles II and the Lords who were gifted the land and divided it up, profiting from the rice and cotton industries. We learned about how France and Spain also had different ideas for ownership of the territory and that the Catholics settled into the area a bit later for fear of a Catholic Spaniard takeover due to their presence in Florida. As we neared Fort Sumter the history lesson then discussed American’s fight for democracy against an English occupation. Roughly halfway through the trip we were welcomed to the upper level to see the dolphins swimming under the bow of the ship. We looped back and waved hello to the U.S. Coast Guard while learning of an older adjacent fort. We passed a few celebrities’ homes. We were given a few recommendations of where to go afterwards, including the African American Museum. The boat boarded right next to this museum and if we had more time, I would have booked this. There were several outdoor exhibitions. We learned that 48% of captured African people who came to the U.S., came through Charleston. A sign nearby indicated 200,000 men, women, and children arrived on slave ships between 1683 and 1808. Our boat captain made a trip to the bottom of the nearby bridge and learned about its architectural construction which took the safety of the prior bridge from 4/100 to compliant with today’s safety standards. The captain related to passengers by calling out who was from Ohio or Maryland and drawing connections to those regions. Upon returning back from the bridge, a few more dolphins were spotted. We learned about the shipments of cars constructed in the U.S. and shipped to Germany.

Lots of history in Harbor tour - This tour was full of historical/harbor facts. I particularly liked the narration on Fort Sumter & Fort Moultrie. The Captain had a good sense of humor and lots of information. It did get a bit cool on upper deck, so I went below. I could still get the tour talk, but the windows needed cleaning.
