Don’t miss this tour - If you want to learn more about the real history of Charleston, you don’t want to miss this tour! Our tour guide, Frank, was very knowledgeable and kind. He shared stories of the “other Charleston”, and he even brought enough water bottles for everyone in the tour group, since it was a warm day. He also gave us each a list of recommended books to read. Take this tour - you’ll be glad you did.

One of the most important things you can do while in Charleston - This was such an informative tour through the “other Charleston”. Frank is a wealth of knowledge about the side of Charleston, indeed the history of this country, that many prefer to gloss over or ignore. Take this tour and remember what we, as a nation, have tried to forget. You’ll be glad you chose to spend the morning listening to the stories of the other Charleston.

Very informative tour - My husband and I selected Frankly Charleston because we were interested in learning the stories and observing areas of Charleston that are not included by the other touring companies. To say that we learned a lot about the roles of blacks, freed and enslaved would be an understatement. We were lucky to tour with the owner, whose name is Franklin. If there was ever a walking and talking history book, it would be this gentleman. My husband and I were really impressed with the amount of information we were given. We listened to stories and saw areas of Charleston that was not provided by the other touring companies. For anyone looking to get an all inclusive (the good and the bad or the pretty and the ugly) this is the touring company for you. Sign up with Frankly Charleston. You will not be disappointed.

Expert Slavery Tour Guide - Franklin was absolutely superb. He was knowledgeable, interactive, considerate, patient, and most importantly, inclusive. He made each person in the tour, feel as though they were the only one on the tour. He is a wealth of knowledge and experience and made the tour feel like we were actually in, the slavery era hearing from a local commoner on what it was like to be in that era. If you are looking for an unvarnished, objective and accurate depiction of the slavery era in Charleston, this is the tour for you.

Insightful, thought provoking tour that goes under the surface of Charleston’s history - This guided tour is fantastic! Frank gave an extremely insightful and truthful tour of Charleston’s history - stories often untold by the history books. He is hugely charismatic and we learned a lot as we walked around Charleston about the contribution of African Americans to Charleston. Jack and Katie

Storyteller’s History of Charleston - The best historians have a storyteller’s sensibilities. They understand timing, provide the right amount of details, know how to present the information in such a way that challenges the listener and respects their intelligence and of course are entertaining. Mr. Williams exemplifies this to the highest degree. His passion was contagious as he showed the group pieces of living history all through the city. Highly recommend.

The REAL history of Charleston - A “must do” If you want to know the real history of Charleston. Frank provides the stories of black Charleston and puts them in the context of how the city and culture was built, based on the enslaved people who lived here (most who were kidnapped to put it bluntly). It’s a small group walking tour with lots of interaction if you have an inquisitive group. Very educational. I was only aware of about 10% of what Frank highlighted. Frank also recommended additional reading and some black-owned restaurants (great soul food!).
