Highlights
  • Fourth Ward - The historic 4th Ward is a stunning urban neighborhood that has been home to several influential African American leaders.
  • Romare Bearden Park - Romare Bearden, an internationally renowned artist from the Charlotte area, was a contemporary of Picasso and spent time in Paris. This park is dedicated to his memory and draws inspiration from many of his paintings.
  • Levine Museum of the New South - This free museum is our first stop, covering history from Native American beginnings to modern-day Charlotte.
  • The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture - Designed by world-famous architect Philip Freelon, who also designed the African American History Museum in Washington DC, this building is a beautiful work of art. It pays homage to Harvey Gantt, a local hero and architect in Charlotte.
  • Johnson C. Smith University - Initially started to train black men in ministry, this Presbyterian college became a coed institution educating black men and women. Today, it partners with city leaders to ensure students are educated on relevant subjects for the highly technical future of this country. It is one of the only urban universities in the city and is home to many of Charlotte’s oldest buildings. We will explore the campus and the surrounding area.

Black History of Charlotte - It’s difficult for me to pick a favorite or most memorable experience because it was all so informative, my eyes and ears kept moving and taking it all in. I definitely plan on doing this again next time I come to town, too much to take in in one visit. Diane, my guide was a pleasure; she is well informed, courteous and just generally made the experience enjoyable. Thank you.

Charlotte Days - The excursion ride was very comfortable. The tour guide was personable, friendly accommodating, and knowledgeable. Diana our tour guide explained the city's infostructure and key players. She included historic parks, homes, and museums on the tour. To top it off we stopped at the quaintest lil Tea shop for an afternoon pick-me-up of Tea and cake. A most delightful tour!
