- Chavin de Huantar - The archaeological site of Chavín de Huántar is perched at an altitude of 3,177 meters (10,425 feet) above sea level in the Andean region of Peru, situated at the junction of the Mosna and Wacheksa rivers. Historically, Chavín was a hub for several principal trade pathways traversing the Cordillera Blanca mountains, making it an ideal location for the central city of the Chavín culture. The site is in proximity to the Callejón de Huáyla Valley, adjacent to the small town of Chavín de Huántar. Presently, Chavín is accessible via a newly improved asphalt road. Spanning an area of 12,000 square meters (129,167 square feet), the complex encompasses large temple edifices with extensive interior and underground sections, pyramid-shaped platforms, enclosures, and depressed central squares, with most structures oriented along a unified axis. Over the years, flooding from nearby rivers has caused significant erosion to the stonework, and its position in the mountains has left it vulnerable to landslides, including a notable one in 1945, and seismic activity, with a significant earthquake occurring in 1970.

The ancient site of Chavín de Huántar is perched 3,177 meters (10,425 feet) above sea level within the Peruvian Andes and is situated at the juncture of the Mosna and Wacheksa rivers. Historically, Chavín was a nexus of principal trade pathways across the Cordillera Blanca mountain range, serving as a key site for the capital city of the Chavín culture. The locale is adjacent to the Callejón de Huáyla Valley, in proximity to the present-day hamlet of Chavín de Huántar. The site is now accessible via an upgraded asphalt road. Spanning 12,000 square meters (129,167 square feet), it encompasses large temple edifices featuring extensive inner and underground chambers, pyramid-like constructs, enclosures, and recessed plazas, largely conforming to a unified layout. Historically, the stone constructs have suffered erosion from riverine floods, and its position in the highlands has left it vulnerable to landslides, notably one in 1945, as well as seismological activity, with a notable earthquake occurring in 1970.
