- Giant Panda Breeding Research Base (Xiongmao Jidi) - Meet your friendly English-speaking guide at your hotel lobby and you’ll head to the Chengdu Panda Breeding Center, a non-profit research and breeding facility for giant pandas and other rare animals. Spend your morning with the cutest, yet impressive, creatures in China! 3 hours inside the Panda Center, tour through the baby and adult panda areas. On a guided tour, visit different sections of the center to get a full overview of a panda’s development. Visit the baby garden, where you can see giant panda cubs born in summer, which weigh only about 3.5 ounces (100 grams) at birth and by the third month are able to walk on their own. Then stop at the sub-adult garden, where the adolescent pandas hang out, and see the adult garden, which houses the giant pandas in all their full-grown glory. Take pictures of this endangered species eating bamboo, sleeping or frolicking about. Finally, visit the red panda section to see these small adorable animals and try to spot the sleeping red pandas stretched out on branches in the red panda garden.

Great experience - stellar English, passionate & knowledgeable, friendly - My tour guide Wells was the best tour guide I had while in China. He was very knowledgeable about the area, spoke English just like an American, and was passionate about his work. He was very friendly and took his time to show me the best of the pandas! Really enjoyed the tour and I highly recommend.

Unique experience in Chengdu - Wells our guide was so friendly and nice he made the day so awesome! He guided us through a VERY crowded site at the Chengdu panda base and we got to see some giant pandas. For us the most impressive part was seeing the red pandas, they were more active and closer to us. It was HOT and extremely crowded and we had our two kids with us so a warning that young kids might not appreciate the crowds and heat. Other than that we really enjoyed our day experiencing something different and unique in Chengdu and talking to Wells who’s English is superb!
He then recommended an authentic lunch place that was delicious!! Awesome time.

Even if it’s raining, it will be a great experience! - We went the panda base on a rainy day, but thanks to Mr.Wells, we had a great time there! The base is sooo huge, we recommend the ones who visit for the first time go there with a guide.

Chengdu Fun - Our guide - Wells - advised us to head out early to Panda Center: great advice as (1) weather was much better (2) the pandas were out and about and (3) the Center was less crowded. Wells and our amazing driver took good care of us over the three days in Chengdu too. Thank you Sam Tours!

Great service! - We had our guide Wells for 2 days (one day for the panda Beeeding Center and one day for the Emei sacred mountain + Leshan giant Buddha).
He was super accomodating.
There was actually a big problem as we had booked the panda volunteer option but because of a miscommunication in how it was advertised on Viator there was no mention that for the Panda center rules the volunteer experience was not allowed for under 8 years old (and our daughter is 7).
Wells tried hard to negotiate with the center management but understood the rules are rules especially in China.
Initially it was quite upsetting for us to be ushered to a room with volunteer badges and about to be given the volunteer tshirts to then have to exit the room and join the general admission queue.
However, Wells and the company Samtour of Chengdu offered a more than generous refund directly to us and insisted to pay for our lunch.
One could argue that maybe there was a bit of superficiality in the communications between Viator, Samtour and the Panda Breeding center (perhaps even more true for the last two mentioned).
But it’s very honorable that - in doubt - Samtour decided to refund an amount that was more than 50% of the amount paid.
All in all the standard experience was excellent too (we saw a lot of pandas from quite close and also a few red pandas) and we learnt that the only difference is that in the volunteer experience you watch a documentary and you crack bamboo that is then served as food to the pandas. You don’t get that much closer or even get near them enough to be able to say that the volunteer experience would have been any better.

Pandas in Chengdu - This is an excellent way to see the pandas. I was picked up and dropped off at my hotel and everything went smoothly. Jojo my guide was knowledgeable and informative. She also shared ideas about other activities I could do in Chengdu after the tour.
