The Guqin, also called ‘Seven-stringed Zither,’ boasts a history spanning over 3,000 years, symbolising the pinnacle of China’s solo musical traditions. It has been declared on the Second Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. A constant feature across the chronicles of Chinese intellect, this ancient instrument’s performance was cultivated as a niche art form, amongst the elite circles of nobility and learned scholars, and hence was never meant for widespread public performances. Moreover, mastering the guqin was considered one of the four arts, together with calligraphy, painting, and an ancient variation of chess, which Chinese scholars were required to master. Following conventional practices, a training period of twenty years was necessary to achieve competence.
