Highlights
  • Chengdu - There are a million reasons Chengdu is an international food destination. It’s a UNESCO city of gastronomy. It’s the most popular Chinese cuisine in China. It has the highest per-capita ratio of restaurants in all of China. And at the same time, visitors know very little about food in Chengdu.

Travel by tuktuk and encounter spots you could never find on your own for a mix of street food, sit-down restaurants, and family-run joints:

Chengdu Street Crepes: This classic local street food comes in one of 4 flavor profiles: sweet, salty, spicy, and strange at a street-stall-turned-shop.

Sichuan-style Wontons: Learn why locals call them “Chaoshou,” at a family restaurant where they’re made to order.

All the Noodles: Originally served on the street by men who carried the ingredients around on bamboo poles, Dandan noodles are possibly the OG hawker dish.

Classic Sichuan Dishes: Sample local delicacies like Mapo Tofu (there’s plenty of not-so-spicy dishes here too).

Dining occurs in establishments favored by residents - modest, family-operated venues - sampling top-tier regional fare undetectable on solo adventures. Highly recommended for your Chengdu trip - Food was amazing and George was an excellent guide. Particularly good way to meet people as a solo traveller. Fascinating insights into Chengdu history as well. One of the best tours I've done.

A beautiful evening with a super Guide! - I loved this tour. The Guide, a nice guy, passionate about this job and with great English called George, took us to five little places that we would never have found on our own. The food was very good and even I can not eat spicy I could taste many dishes. We had a wonderful evening!

A brilliant tour with Jaz, well worth it! - We had a brilliant time with Jaz touring around Chengdu. We got to try foods we would never have come across otherwise in different places around the city, including hole in the wall street food stall and authentic busy restaurants off the tourist trail. Jaz was so friendly and warm and did a fantastic job catering to two vegetarians in our group, making sure that even where it wasn't possible to have a fully vegetarian version of dishes, they were able to have the non-meat parts and still have the experience. The bar was a great ending, a good bit of history to learn while having a nightcap.

Delicious adventure - Jaz has been an amazing guide through delicious culinary specialties. She managed to gave us the opportunity to taste amazing non spicy food, which is very tough in Sichuan! All the restaurants and street food we went to were delicious and their boss were very welcoming. We ended in a great location, a vintage bar really comfy and got to taste the plum alcohol. The tuktuk tour and driver were fun, it's always a must do in China. One advice, do not eat at all during the day if you want to be able to taste it all!

Chino and Chengdu food are the best - Many thanks to our food guide Qinou for organizing my food tour in Chengdu. We visited five places, each offering a rich experience. Qinou shared insights about the food culture, which added to the charm of the dishes. Most importantly, I joined the tour with a group of Indian families, and we had a great time talking. I believe that cross-cultural exchange is a significant aspect of food travel.

Food hideaways - local gems! - The tour enabled us to get to know the amazing food the region has to offer. Finding suitable food was very tricky due to language and translation barriers and being vegetarian. Jaz- our tour guide made it fun, showed us real gems of local hide aways, we would not be able to find ourselves or able to communicate our dietary requirements. Jaz was an engaging storyteller, happy to chat about history and culture. We will return, hoping she could be our guide on other adventures like Shangri-La. 🙏
