- Santhome Cathedral Basilica - The Santhome Basilica was initially built by the Portuguese in the 15th century. Today, the cathedral stands as a magnificent Neo-Gothic structure.
Portuguese tradition holds that St. Thomas arrived and preached in Chennai between 52 A.D. and 72 A.D. It is believed that St. Thomas was buried here, making it one of the three churches in the world built over the grave of an Apostle.
- Kapaleeshwarar Temple - The Kapaleeshwarar temple is an ancient “living” temple, still in daily use. The temple’s age is widely debated, but the common belief is that it was built in the 7th century CE by the ruling Pallavas.
- Marina Beach - Enjoy a slow drive past Marina Beach, one of the longest urban beaches in the world. The facade features many colonial-era buildings, and you’ll be engaged in lively conversations about them.
- Marina Beach Fish Market - We will drive by a fishing market. Deep-sea fishing here is done using small boats rather than large trawlers. Every day, fishermen venture into the sea and return with their catch, which is then sold on the beach.
- C.S.I. St. George’s Cathedral - St. George’s Cathedral is a magnificent church built by the British in 1815 using lottery funds. St. George’s holds an important place in the history of Protestant Christianity in India.
The church features stunning stained glass windows, as well as fascinating memorials, tablets, and statues.
We will also take a walk in the church’s graveyard, one of the oldest Anglican graveyards in India. Despite how eerie it may sound, it is quite fascinating. Some gravestones here have stories to tell!
- Government Museum - The Egmore Museum is one of the finest and oldest museums in India. The bronze sculpture gallery is a highlight, showcasing some of the greatest ancient sculptures ever made.
