It’s quite possible to dedicate an entire day to discovering the amazing temples, caves and rock sculptures of Kanchipuram and Mamallapuram. The majority of these were sculpted straight from the rock in the 7th-century under the rule of the Pallava king Narasimhavarman I, also known as Mamalla (Great Wrestler), the one who brought the city its name. Great Temple tour from Chennai - Had a fantastic tour with my guide Nanda, he was very good and passed on lots of interesting information. Very friendly and attentive. The day itself was quite long but this was to be expected with all the visits that are packed in. I would not have changed anything. The driver Venkadesh was also very professional and safe.

Great day trip from Chennai - We spend a great day with Rajesh and the driver visiting the historical sites and temples. We stopped at two nice restaurants for breakfast and lunch. Rajesh and the driver took good care of us throughout the day and always ensuring to minimise our walking in the heat. Wonderful way to start our holidays!

Tamil Nadu- the Scotland of India? - Had already been to Rajasthan and Kerala, but found my 2nd visit to India very different, and simply loved it- 8 days of full-on smells, colours, sounds and tastes. Started in Chennai, a bustling sea-side city, which seemed more "normal" compared to the cities of the north (or maybe it was because I'd seen similar before). Bit sprawling on the OMR (On Main Road), but full of interest. Apart from visiting historical sites, went to the beach, to Pondy Bazaar and to a Shopping Mall, just as many young Indians do on a Sunday (PS Got loads of presents to bring home!) Arranged a driver with the doorman at the hotel, and toured mountain area (Yercaud) where, unfortunately, it rained as we arrived (and the hotel was awful!), but the views (and sounds) in the morning were spectacular! Headed to near Karaikudi - to Kanadukathan- to a Chettinadu Mansion hotel, which is a must if you visit. From there, after visiting a couple of local attractions (but deciding not to go to Madurai) moved to Tanjore, visiting the magnificent main temple. From Tanjore to Puducherry, with its fascinating mixture of Indian and French. A visit to Mahabalipuram on the way back to Chennai. Didn't do all the tourist parts there because it was just so so busy! What did I like? I fell in love with the Chettinaadu heritage, with the mountains, with the older temples, with the different food, and with the people, who wouldn't bat an eyelid even when I was the only European in the midst. What didn't I like? how busy some of the big sites were; and you forget how big this country is so, to avoid sitting in the car for days on end, we were forced to miss various places on the list, such as Trichy, Madurai and Rameswaram- next time. Will provide hotel/food reviews separately.

Kanchipuram and Mahabalipuram day tour - This was a great trip out, my guide was very informative and helpful. We visited the temples of Kanchipuram first and from there went to a traditional Tamil House. Then stopped for a lovely Indian lunch before making our way to Mahabalipuram. The temples are all incredible and very different, it was a super day out and would definitely recommend.

Great full day learning a lot about Pallava art and architecture of over 1500 years ago. - Great day touring both sites with Rajesh as guide and a driver. Additional guide provided for the Mahabalipuram component. Very nice lunch of South Indian food provided, too. Learned a lot about Pallava art and architecture dating from around 600AD. Amazing early Dravidian art and culture that connected through to SE Asia and even the Romans. We also visited a silk weaving site, learning that it takes 2 months to make a wedding sari! Rajesh and the driver, plus additional guide, steared us through a very interesting day. The only downside was multiple traffic jams. But, it was a holiday season and the driver was very skillful! We were well looked after.
