The Masua hub encompassed multiple mining sites situated in the Sulcis area - a Sardinian region abundant with coal, sulphur, barium, zinc, lead, silver, and other metals. Initial extraction can be traced back to 1600, although significant economic impact wasn’t seen until the rapid growth of the mining sector in the entire region during the early 1900s. Predominantly, the mining process, particularly of coal caves, involved elementary technology until the dawn of the 20th century. However, the late 19th century saw advanced mining techniques for metal collection, driven mostly by affluent Northern European corporations invested in enhancing mining efficiency. Fast forward to 1922, the Masua mines transferred ownership to the Belgian Vieille Montagne Company. The increased exploitation was tied to the rising demand for zinc and lead post World War I reconstruction and advancements in steel alloy technology.
