Chiang Mai - After a brief transfer, your cycling journey begins just outside Chiang Mai! Pedal through rice paddies and along irrigation canals. Occasionally, you’ll need to pause for a herd of buffalo crossing your path. Travel from village to village on tranquil country roads, each village boasting its own vibrant temple. Today’s goal is the Mae Nam Ngat reservoir, part of the 1400 km2 Sri Lanna nature reserve. You’ll reach the floating hotel by longtail boat, where you can swim, fish, canoe, and bask in the serenity.
Mae Nam Ngat – Chiang Dao – 50 km
Mae Nam - Following a short boat ride, continue cycling north towards the picturesque Chiang Dao valley. This valley is overshadowed by the imposing Doi Luang, Thailand’s third highest mountain at 2240 meters. At the mountain’s base, you’ll find caves worth exploring. Spend the night at the foot of Doi Luang, surrounded by stunning scenery.
Chiang Dao – Mae Salak – 67 km
Chiang Dao - Start your day with a hearty breakfast, followed by a transfer to the Fang valley. Begin cycling through a vast horticultural region where exotic vegetables are cultivated. Later, pass by extensive mandarin plantations. The final 15 kilometers are hilly with a few short climbs. The resort where you’ll stay overnight is beautifully situated on the Kok river, offering a perfect spot to unwind after a long day of cycling.
Mae Salak – Chiang Rai – 25 km
Chiang Rai - After breakfast, enjoy a 2-hour boat ride on the Kok river through a sparsely populated area. En route, visit a Lisu village, home to one of the 7 colorful hill tribes originally from Tibet and southern China. Most hill tribes still reside in primitive bamboo huts. In the village of Ruamit, switch from boat to bike and cycle on a gently sloping country road to Chiang Rai, today’s final destination.
Chiang Rai – Chiang Saen – 65 km – transfer to Chiang Khong
Chiang Saen - Begin your morning cycling along the Kok river, experiencing Thai rural life. Pedal through rice fields and visit a rubber plantation. Next, head to a Chinese Buddhist temple to see Thailand’s largest “Happy” Buddha statue. Upon reaching Chiang Saen, take an afternoon car trip to the Three Country Point and visit the opium museum. Then, enjoy a boat ride on the Mekong River through the Golden Triangle. In the late afternoon, you’ll be transferred to your hotel in Chiang Khong.
Chiang Khong – Pakbeng
Chiang Khong - Early in the morning, transfer to the border. At customs, you’ll meet your boat guide. After crossing the border via the Mekong River, board a comfortable boat for a 350-kilometer journey over the next 2 days. Stop to visit a village along the way before continuing your voyage. Spend the night in Pakbeng, a village halfway between Chiang Khong and Luang Prabang.
Pakbeng – Luang Prabang
Pak Beng - After breakfast, resume your journey. Today’s landscape becomes more dramatic as you travel through gorges where the Mekong River narrows to 200 meters. Visit the renowned Pak Ou caves, home to thousands of Buddha statues. Finally, arrive in Luang Prabang, the stunning final destination of this trip.
