From Waves to Wonders: A Surfer’s Journey Through Chichen Itza
Trading my surfboard for a day of exploring ancient ruins and sacred cenotes, I embarked on a private tour of Chichen Itza. With a knowledgeable guide and a magical cenote swim, it was a refreshing change from my usual surf adventures.
Sunrise at Chichen Itza
As a nomadic surfer, I’m always on the lookout for new adventures that take me beyond the waves. So when I heard about the Chichen Itza Tour, I knew it was time to trade my surfboard for a day of exploring ancient ruins and sacred cenotes. The day began with a 6:30 a.m. pickup, and as someone who chases the dawn for the perfect surf, the early start felt just right. Our guide, Alex, and driver, Enrique, greeted us with warm smiles and a clear itinerary for the day. They were considerate of our West Coast time zone, allowing us to catch a few more winks on the drive to Chichen Itza.
Arriving at the site before the crowds, we had the rare opportunity to wander through the ancient Mayan city in peace. Alex’s knowledge of Mayan history and culture was impressive, and he shared stories that brought the ruins to life. The early morning light cast a golden hue over the stone structures, creating a serene atmosphere that was perfect for capturing photos. It was a refreshing change from the bustling beach towns I’m used to, and I found myself completely immersed in the history and mystery of Chichen Itza.
A Dip in the Cenote
After exploring the ruins, we headed to Samula Cenote for a swim. As a surfer, I’m no stranger to the water, but swimming in a cenote was a whole new experience. The cenote was a hidden gem, not too crowded, and had an almost magical quality to it. The cool, clear water was a welcome relief after the morning’s exploration, and I took my time floating and soaking in the tranquility. Alex had recommended this particular cenote, and his choice was spot on.
The cenote’s natural beauty was a stark contrast to the ocean waves I’m used to riding, but it was just as captivating. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of awe as I swam beneath the limestone formations, the sunlight filtering through the water creating a dance of light and shadow. It was a moment of pure bliss, and I was grateful for the chance to experience it.
Yucatan Flavors and Colonial Charm
Our adventure continued with a delicious lunch at a Yucatan restaurant. The cochinita pibil was a standout dish, and my fellow adventurer declared it the best on the peninsula. The restaurant’s authentic atmosphere added to the experience, and it was a perfect way to refuel after a morning of exploration.
With our appetites satisfied, we had some free time to explore the charming colonial town of Valladolid. The town’s main square and convent areas were a delight to wander through, offering a glimpse into the region’s rich history and culture. It was a leisurely afternoon, and I enjoyed the opportunity to take in the sights at my own pace.
As the day came to a close, I reflected on the incredible experiences we had. The Chichen Itza Tour was a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty, and it was a refreshing change from my usual surf-centric adventures. Absolute Adventures’ commitment to excellence and attention to detail made the day truly unforgettable. I left with a newfound appreciation for the Yucatan Peninsula and a desire to explore more of its hidden treasures.
