A varied and thought-provoking day out - This trip gave us a lovely and varied day out, which covered a lot of ground. The fact that the tour started early meant that we reached Chichén Itzá just before it opened, so the bulk of our time there was spent before it became very crowded, and before the heat became very intense. Our guide there, Henry, was wonderful – he gave us interesting and practical insights into the function, acoustics and belief systems surrounding the structures, and was also an excellent photographer. We then got to spend a bit of time on our own wandering around the site, before our kind and flexible driver, Sergio – who ensured we were well supplied with water, throughout – took us to the cenote. We had a buffet lunch at the on-site restaurant before swimming in the gorgeous space. After that, Sergio took us to Ek Balam, and our guide there, William, was fantastic – his enthusiasm, curiosity and passion for the site were infectious, and taught us a lot, in a kind and conversational way, about the decoration, possible functions, and continued archaeological uncovering of the ruins. The buildings are very interesting and have a beautiful setting – it’s more interactive than Chichén Itzá; you can explore the structures in a different way, and it’s perhaps easier to get a feel for it as a space as it was once inhabited. Comparing the two two sites is, in itself, an interesting experience. Would definitely recommend! Make sure to bring cash for the locker and life jackets at the cenote, as well as for tips and entrance fees.
