- Mt. Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station - This is the most frequented of the four 5th stations on Mount Fuji, offering the best development and easiest access via public transport from Tokyo. The Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station is accessible nearly all year, depending on snow conditions, and remains a popular sightseeing destination even outside the climbing season.
The station is reached via the Fuji Subaru Line, a scenic toll road ascending Mount Fuji’s lower northern slopes, starting in Fujikawaguchiko Town. It may experience temporary partial closures in winter due to heavy snowfall. Additionally, the road is closed to private vehicles for most of the climbing season (July 14 to September 10, 2023). At an elevation of 2300 meters, the Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station provides a stunning view of the Fuji Five Lakes area below, attracting visitors even if they are not climbing the mountain. An observation point with clear views of Fujiyoshida City and Lake Yamanaka is located at Komitake Shrine behind the shops.
- Oshino Hakkai - This refers to Oshino Hakkai (忍野八海), a renowned group of eight natural spring ponds in Oshino, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. These ponds are fed by snowmelt from Mount Fuji, which filters through volcanic rock, resulting in exceptionally clear water.
Oshino Hakkai is a favored tourist spot known for its picturesque scenery, traditional Japanese ambiance, and the reflection of Mount Fuji in the ponds on clear days. The area also features thatched-roof houses, small shops offering local delicacies, and fresh water that can be drunk directly from the springs.
- Lake Ashinoko - Lake Ashinoko, also known as Lake Ashi, is a scenic crater lake in Hakone, Japan. It is celebrated for its breathtaking views of Mount Fuji and is a popular tourist destination, offering boat cruises, hot springs, and scenic walking trails around its shores. The lake was formed in the caldera of Mount Hakone following a volcanic eruption nearly 3000 years ago.
Togendai is a well-known spot in Japan, located near Mount Fuji. It serves as the starting point for the ascent to Mount Fuji’s summit via the Fujisan Gotemba Trail. Togendai also provides stunning views of the surrounding landscape and Lake Ashi.
- Hakone Moto Tsumiya Shrine - Moto Hakone Shrine (元箱根神社, Moto-Hakone Jinja) is a Shinto shrine situated on the shores of Lake Ashi in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. It’s a tranquil and picturesque location, famous for its torii gate standing in the water, known as the “Torii of Peace.” The shrine is nestled in a forested area, with Mount Hakone and the surrounding nature offering a beautiful backdrop.
Visitors often come to Moto Hakone Shrine to pray for good fortune, particularly in travel and business, as the shrine is associated with protection and prosperity. The setting provides beautiful views of Lake Ashi and, on clear days, Mount Fuji.
Moto Hakone Shrine is easily accessible by boat or by walking from the nearby Hakone-machi or Moto-Hakone towns. It is also part of the broader Hakone area, a popular destination known for its hot springs (onsen), art museums, and scenic nature trails.
- Owaku-dani Valley - Owakudani (大涌谷, Ōwakudani) is the area surrounding a crater formed during the last eruption of Mount Hakone around 3000 years ago. Today, much of the area is an active volcanic zone where sulfurous fumes, hot springs, and hot rivers can be experienced. Additionally, Owakudani offers excellent views of Mount Fuji on clear days.
Eggs cooked in Owakudani’s hot spring pools, with their shells blackened by the sulfur, are available for purchase at local shops, and consuming one is said to extend one’s life by seven years.
- Gotemba Premium Outlets - The Gotemba Premium Outlets are Japan’s most popular outlet mall, located in Gotemba City at the base of Mount Fuji, not far from Hakone. The mall features approximately 300 stores and restaurants, a food court, a 50-meter-high Ferris wheel, a hotel, and a public hot spring bath.
The stores at the Premium Outlets are outlets of internationally recognized brands in fashion, sports, food, household goods, and electronics, ranging from everyday items to luxury goods. While the prices are not extremely low, they are generally better than those found at regular retail shops in Japan. Overall, it is a pleasant place for a day of shopping, offering a wide variety and reasonable prices.
