- Mt. Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station - This is the most frequented of the four 5th stations on Mount Fuji, offering the best development and easiest access via public transport from Tokyo. The Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station is accessible nearly all year, depending on snow conditions, and remains a popular sightseeing destination even outside the climbing season.
The station is reached via the Fuji Subaru Line, a scenic toll road ascending Mount Fuji’s lower northern slopes, starting in Fujikawaguchiko Town. It may be partially closed in winter during heavy snowfall. Additionally, the road is closed to private vehicles for most of the climbing season (July 14 to September 10, 2023). At 2300 meters above sea level, the Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station provides a breathtaking view of the Fuji Five Lakes area below, making it a favored spot even for those not climbing the mountain. An observation point with clear views of Fujiyoshida City and Lake Yamanaka is located at Komitake Shrine behind the shops.
- Lake Ashinoko - Lake Ashinoko, also known as Lake Ashi, is a picturesque crater lake in Hakone, Japan. It is famous for its stunning views of Mount Fuji and is a popular tourist destination, offering boat cruises, hot springs, and scenic walking trails around its shores. The lake was formed in the caldera of Mount Hakone following a volcanic eruption nearly 3000 years ago.
Togendai is a well-known spot in Japan, situated near Mount Fuji. It serves as the starting point for the ascent to Mount Fuji’s summit via the Fujisan Gotemba Trail. Togendai also provides breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape and Lake Ashi.
- Owaku-dani Valley - Owakudani (大涌谷, Ōwakudani) is the area surrounding a crater formed during the last eruption of Mount Hakone around 3000 years ago. Today, much of the area is an active volcanic zone where sulfurous fumes, hot springs, and hot rivers can be experienced. Additionally, Owakudani offers excellent views of Mount Fuji on clear days.
Eggs cooked in Owakudani’s hot spring pools, with their shells blackened by the sulfur, are available for purchase at local shops, and consuming one is said to extend one’s life by seven years.
- Hakone Moto Tsumiya Shrine - Moto Hakone Shrine (元箱根神社, Moto-Hakone Jinja) is a Shinto shrine located on the shores of Lake Ashi in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. It’s a tranquil and picturesque destination, renowned for its torii gate that stands in the water, known as the “Torii of Peace.” The shrine itself is nestled in a forested area, with Mount Hakone and the surrounding nature providing a stunning backdrop.
Visitors often come to Moto Hakone Shrine to pray for good fortune, particularly in travel and business, as the shrine is associated with protection and prosperity. The setting offers beautiful views of Lake Ashi and, on clear days, Mount Fuji.
Moto Hakone Shrine is easily accessible by boat or by walking from the nearby Hakone-machi or Moto-Hakone towns. It is also part of the wider Hakone area, a popular destination known for its hot springs (onsen), art museums, and scenic nature trails.
- The Hakone Open-Air Museum - The Hakone Open-Air Museum, opened in 1969, is celebrated for its stunning outdoor sculptures set against the natural beauty of the Hakone mountains. The museum offers a harmonious blend of art and nature, making it a popular destination for art enthusiasts and tourists alike.
Over 120 sculptures are displayed across a vast garden, featuring works by renowned artists like Henry Moore, Niki de Saint Phalle, and others. A dedicated indoor gallery showcases over 300 works by Pablo Picasso, including ceramics, paintings, and drawings. A unique tower structure allows visitors to enter and climb to enjoy panoramic views through colorful stained-glass panels.
- Gotemba Premium Outlets - The Gotemba Premium Outlets are Japan’s most popular outlet mall, located in Gotemba City at the base of Mount Fuji, not far from Hakone. The mall features around 300 stores and restaurants, a food court, a 50-meter-high Ferris wheel, a hotel, and a public hot spring bath.
The stores at the Premium Outlets are outlets of internationally known brands of fashion, sports, food, household goods, and electronics, ranging from everyday items to luxury goods. The prices are not extremely low, but they are generally better than those at regular retail shops in Japan. Overall, it is a pleasant place for a day of shopping, offering a wide variety and reasonable prices.
