- Mt. Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station - It is the most popular of the four 5th stations on Mount Fuji and the best developed and easiest to access by public transportation from Tokyo. The Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station is accessible almost year-round, snow conditions permitting, and is a popular sightseeing spot even outside of the climbing season.
The station is reached by the Fuji Subaru Line, a scenic toll road up Mount Fuji’s lower northern slopes, that begins in Fujikawaguchiko Town. It may temporarily get partially closed in winter in times of heavy snow. Furthermore, the road is closed to private vehicles during the majority of the climbing season (July 14 to September 10, 2023).
At 2300 meters above sea level, the Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station offers a commanding view of the Fuji Five Lakes area below, making it a popular spot even for those who are not intent on climbing the mountain. An observation point with unobstructed views of Fujiyoshida City and Lake Yamanaka can be found at Komitake Shrine behind the shops.
- Oshino Hakkai - Oshino Hakkai (忍野八海) is a touristy set of eight ponds in Oshino, a small village in the Fuji Five Lake region, located between Lake Kawaguchiko and Lake Yamanakako on the site of a former sixth lake that dried out several hundred years ago. The eight ponds are fed by snow melt from the slopes of nearby Mount Fuji that filters down the mountain through porous layers of lava for over 80 years, resulting in very clear spring water that is revered by the locals.
Next to one pond, visitors can drink the cool water straight from the source. The ponds are quite deep and have interesting freshwater plant life and large fish. Although the ponds have been developed into tourist attractions and can become quite crowded with visitors, they have a pleasant atmosphere as long as you do not expect untouched nature.
- Lake Ashinoko - Lake Ashinoko, also known as Lake Ashi, is a scenic crater lake in Hakone, Japan. It is renowned for its stunning views of Mount Fuji and is a popular destination for tourists, offering boat cruises, hot springs, and picturesque walking trails arround its shores. The lake was formed in the caldera of Mount Hakone after a volcanic eruption nearly 3000 years ago.
Togendai is a popular spot in Japan, Located near Mount Fuji. It is known as the starting point for the ascent to Mount Fuji summit via the Fujisan Gotemba Trail. Togendai also offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape and Lake Ashi.
- Owaku-dani Valley - Owakudani (大涌谷, Ōwakudani) is the area around a crater created during the last eruption of Mount Hakone some 3000 years ago. Today, much of the area is an active volcanic zone where sulfurous fumes, hot springs, and hot rivers can be experienced. Additionally, Owakudani has good views of Mount Fuji on clear days.
Eggs cooked in Owakudani’s hot spring pools with their shells blackened by the sulfur are on sale at shops in the area, and eating one is said to prolong one’s life by seven years.
- Gotemba Premium Outlets - The Gotemba Premium Outlets are Japan’s most popular outlet mall, located in Gotemba City at the base of Mount Fuji, not far from Hakone. The mall features around 300 stores and restaurants, a food court, a 50-meter-high Ferris wheel, a hotel, and a public hot spring bath.
The stores found at the Premium Outlets are the outlets of internationally known brands of fashion, sports, food, household goods, and electronics, and range from everyday items to luxury goods. The prices are not ridiculously cheap, but they are better on average than what you will find at regular retail shops in Japan. Overall it is a nice place for a day of shopping, with a lot of variety and reasonable prices.
