Nami Island - The journey from Seoul to Nami Island takes approximately 2 hours.

Soyang River Sky Walk - The Soyanggang Skywalk stretches 174 meters over the river, featuring a transparent glass floor for 156 meters of its length. At the end of the skywalk, visitors can enjoy a circular plaza and an observatory, known for their stunning panoramic views, especially at sunset. The Ssogarisang sculpture, depicting a leopard mandarin fish, stands on the opposite side of the plaza, with water flowing from a fountain at set intervals, enhancing its charm.

Yeonggeumjeong - Yeonggeumjeong is the area around the Sokcho Lighthouse in Sokcho-si City. The name Yeonggeumjeong is derived from the idea that the sound of waves hitting the rocks resembles the melody of a geomungo (a traditional six-stringed instrument). At the end of a 50-meter-long bridge built over a rocky peninsula, there is a pavilion offering views of the East Sea.

Mt. Seoraksan (inc. cable car) and Hiking

Seoraksan National Park - Seoraksan Mountain is one of Korea’s most renowned tourist spots, spanning areas including Sokcho, Goseong, Inje, and Yangyang in Gangwon-do. It was designated Korea’s fifth national park in 1970 and became the country’s first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1982. It is also listed in the IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Areas, a global standard for best practices in conservation. The park, covering 398 km², is divided into the outer section (“Oeseorak”), the inner section (“Naeseorak”), and the southern section (“Namseorak”). Daecheongbong Peak (1,708 m), the third highest peak in Korea, is the main peak of Seoraksan. The mountain is named “Seorak” (meaning snowy peak) because it is covered with snow for five to six months each year.

Sinheungsa Temple - Sinheungsa Temple’s history began with the establishment of Hyangseongsa Temple in 652, during the sixth year of Queen Jindeok’s reign in the Shilla Kingdom. Precept Master Jajang founded the temple where Kensington Hotel now stands. Hyangseongsa was destroyed by fire in 698, during the seventh year of King Hyoso’s reign. Three years later, Great Master Uisang rebuilt it at the site of Neunginam Hermitage, now called Naewonam Hermitage, and renamed it Seonjeongsa Temple.

Ojukheon - Ojukheon House is a historical site where Sin Saimdang (1504-1551) and her son, Yi I (pen-name: Yulgok, 1536-1584), one of Korea’s greatest Confucian scholars, were born. Sin Saimdang was a remarkable artist and a renowned role model as a good wife and wise mother, while Yi I was one of the two greatest scholars of the Joseon Dynasty, alongside Yi Hwang. Ojukheon House was built by scholar Choe Chi-un (1390~1440). It features a hip-and-gable roof and measures three kan (a unit of measurement between two columns) at the front and two kan at the sides. The left side of the front has two kan used as the main room, while the right side has one kan with a Korean floor heating system. The wooden materials supporting the eaves are built in the Ikkong structural style, which includes a beak-like decoration to support the roof’s weight. Ojukheon House is one of the oldest traditional Korean houses.

ARTE MUSEUM GANGNEUNG - Arte Museum Valley Gangneung, a leader in future Korean media art production, is located in a uniquely Korean setting that includes the tranquil Heo Gyun, Heo Nanseolheon Park, and the lush Gyeongpo Lake. ‘Arte Museum’ is a media art exhibition hall created by ‘D’strict,’ known for the Time Square Waterfall visuals. Korea now boasts four large exhibition halls in Jeju, Yeosu, Gangneung, and Busan, which is set to open next year. Director Hee-jun Jeong, who has been with Arte Museum Valley Gangneung since its inception, provided extensive insights from the introduction of the exhibition hall to an expert’s perspective on Korean media art.

Gyeongpodae - ‘Gyeongpodae Pavilion,’ located at 365, Gyeongpo-ro, Gangneung-si, is a notable pavilion representing Gangneung and is designated as Gangwon-do Provincial Tangible Cultural Property No. 6. Built during the Goryeo period and relocated during the Joseon period, Gyeongpodae Pavilion offers a unique atmosphere starting from its entrance. The tall pine trees at the entrance of the small hill symbolize the boundary between the world and tranquility.

Kwangjang Market - Gwangjang Market, Korea’s first permanent market, remains a popular tourist destination. The name Gwangjang means “to gather from afar and keep altogether.” Initially a small trading center for nearby regions, it has grown into a large wholesale market selling a variety of goods, including upholstery, imported items, groceries, dried fish, traditional goods, and more. The most popular area is the food street, connected to the East Gate, North Gate 2, and South Gate 1, offering a wide range of menus. It is highly recommended for international travelers.

Seoul

Seoul City Wall - This hiking trail runs from Hyehwamun to Heunginjimun, passing via Naksan (124m), the lowest of Seoul’s four inner mountains. Naksan, also known as Naktasan (“Camel Mountain”) or Tarak, resembles a camel’s humps. The course is relatively easy due to its gentle slope. Observant visitors will notice the different shapes of the stones, depending on the wall’s construction period, as they walk along the path behind the Catholic Univ. of Korea.

N Seoul Tower - Namsan Seoul Tower, Korea’s first multipurpose tower, combines a sightseeing observatory with a broadcasting tower. For the past 40 years, it has been an iconic landmark and a major tourist attraction. The tower’s observatory offers a panoramic view of the city, making it a favorite among Seoul citizens and tourists. Another highlight is the Namsan Cable Car, which began operations in 1962, transporting passengers from the mountain’s base to the tower. Shuttle buses to the Namsan Cable Car from downtown Seoul are available for visitors’ convenience.

Gyeongbokgung Palace - Built in 1395, Gyeongbokgung Palace is known as the Northern Palace due to its location furthest north compared to Changdeokgung (Eastern Palace) and Gyeonghuigung (Western Palace). It is considered the most beautiful and largest of the five palaces. The palace was destroyed by fire during the Imjin War (1592-1598) but was later restored under Heungseondaewongun during King Gojong’s reign (1852-1919). Notably, Gyeonghoeru Pavilion and the pond around Hyangwonjeong Pavilion have remained relatively intact. The raised dias and stone markers of Geunjeongjeon showcase the representative art style of their time. The National Palace Museum of Korea is located outside Heungnyemun Gate, and the National Folk Museum is on the eastern side of Hyangwonjeong Pavilion.

Bukchon Hanok Village - Surrounded by Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace, and Jongmyo Shrine, Bukchon Hanok Village is home to hundreds of traditional houses, called hanok, dating back to the Joseon dynasty. The name Bukchon, meaning “northern village,” comes from its location north of two significant Seoul landmarks, Cheonggyecheon Stream and Jongno. Today, many hanoks serve as cultural centers, guesthouses, restaurants, and tea houses, offering visitors a chance to experience traditional Korean culture. As Bukchon Hanok Village is a residential area, visitors are advised to be respectful while exploring.
