- Colosseum - Experience two thousand years of captivating history at the Colosseum, the ancient Roman arena where Gladiator battles were held. The Colosseum stands as a remarkable feat of engineering and a testament to Ancient Rome’s architectural brilliance.
- Arch of Constantine - The Arch of Constantine is one of several triumphal arches from Ancient Rome, located just outside the Colosseum. Historically, it connected the Roman Forum area to the central Rome’s major entertainment and public bathing complexes.
- Circus Maximus - The Circus Maximus was the largest stadium in ancient Rome, renowned for its chariot races (think of the movie “Ben Hur”). This elongated, elliptical track with a central island could seat 250,000 people, a quarter of Rome’s ancient population.
- Palatine Hill - Archaeological evidence shows that Palatine Hill has been inhabited since the tenth century BC, but its peak was during the Roman Empire when it was akin to the Beverly Hills of Rome. Roman nobility, including the Emperor, resided here and could watch chariot races from their palaces.
- Colle Capitolino - The Capitoline Hill is the smallest yet most significant of Rome’s seven hills. As the political and religious center of Rome, it symbolized Rome’s status as Caput Mundi, the capital of the world. Today, visitors can admire the elegant piazza designed by Michelangelo during the Renaissance and enjoy a stunning view of the Roman Forum from the hill’s backside.
- Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele II - Officially named the Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II, this grand white marble monument in Piazza Venezia honors Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of a united Italy.
- Pantheon - Constructed over 1800 years ago, the magnificent Pantheon remains a symbol of the great Roman Empire. Originally a temple to all gods, the Pantheon is renowned for its impressive coffered dome and the massive oculus at its center, showcasing extraordinary architectural and engineering prowess.
KINDLY NOTE: Viewing the Pantheon from the outside is free. As of July 2023, a ticket costing 5 Euro is required to visit the interior. If you wish to enter the Pantheon, please request a reservation.
- Trevi Fountain - Believe it or not, the Trevi Fountain is still supplied by an ancient aqueduct, the Aqua Virgo, built in 19 BC. This elaborate Baroque fountain by Bernini, featuring mythical figures in travertine, is one of the world’s most iconic fountains.
- St. Peter’s Basilica - Located across the Tiber River from Rome’s historic center, St. Peter’s Basilica stands on the site where Saint Peter was martyred and buried in 64 AD. The grand church, with its dome designed by Michelangelo, houses numerous artworks, including Michelangelo’s famous Pietà. This stop allows you to view the church and piazza from the outside; entry into the basilica is not included.
- Monumento a Garibaldi - The lush Janiculum Hill is adorned with monuments to Garibaldi and his makeshift army, who fought valiantly for Italian unification here in 1849. A grand monument to the Italian hero stands in Piazzale Giuseppe Garibaldi, while his Brazilian-born wife, Anita, has her own monument about 200 meters away in Piazzale Anita Garibaldi. Anita succumbed to malaria, along with their unborn child, shortly after the siege.
