âCoba was once a huge city, home to about 50,000 people at its height. Coba means
âruffled watersâ because the city was located on two breezy lagoons. It’s not as well known as Chichen Itza, so it tends to be quieter and more intimate to move around.’

To evade the extreme heat and throngs of people, we ensure we get to Coba early. This site, one of the latest to be unearthed in Yucatan, played a significant role in the ancient Mayan civilization. The highlight of the tour includes the towering Nohoch Mul Pyramid, which stands over 40 metres tall, and the stelae that commemorate the strong matriarchs of historic Coba. Valentina notes, ‘The central pyramid of Coba is the largest in this area and serves as the focal point for the ancient ‘white roads’ that spread out across the site. These roads, over 50 of which can be found in and around Coba, were integral for trade and connections.’
Following this, we’ll visit a Mayan community where modern amenities like running water or electricity are absent. This will give you a chance to interact with the locals and delve deeper into their way of life and customs. After a customary Mayan ritual, we will savor a local lunch at a restaurant in the vicinity. We end the day with a revitalizing dip in a proximate cenote.
