Often hailed as the jewel of the Mosel River, Cochem captivates with its romantic ambiance and picturesque landscapes. In history, it served as an Imperial estate and faced sieges and occupations by the French. The original fortress was demolished in the conquest of King Louis XIV - an event that triggered a prolonged period of rebuilding. The town fell under Napoleon’s forces in the 18th century but later on, transferred under Prussian control when Napoleon fell from power. World War II had its impacts on Cochem, with most of the city being devastated. Post-war, it was incorporated into the newly formed German State of Rhineland-Palatinate.
