Setting Sail on the Colorado

As a former professional surfer, my life has always revolved around the ocean’s rhythm. But this time, I traded the salty waves of the Caribbean for the serene flow of the Colorado River in Coconino County. The allure of the Sit-In Hardshell Kayak Adventure was too tempting to resist. I was eager to experience the peace of the wilderness and the thrill of kayaking above the iconic Horseshoe Bend.

The journey began with a unique backhaul taxi upstream, a novel experience for someone used to paddling out to sea. Our boat pilot, Alex, was a gem. Friendly and informative, he pointed out landmarks and shared stories of the river’s rich history. His orientation on overnight camping was invaluable, especially for someone like me, more accustomed to beach bonfires than riverbank campsites. Alex’s assurance that their boats would be patrolling the river, ready to assist with a simple wave, added a comforting layer of security to our adventure.
