Discovering Coimbra’s Historical Tapestry
As the year draws to a close, Coimbra, with its rich historical tapestry, offers a perfect prelude to the New Year. The city, known for its ancient university and vibrant cultural scene, is a treasure trove of experiences waiting to be explored. On December 28th, the weather is clear and inviting, making it an ideal day to embark on a journey through time with the Knights Templar Tour. This private tour, available from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM, takes you on a fascinating exploration of the Knights Templar’s history, starting in the city of Tomar. Here, the Convent of Christ stands as a testament to Portugal’s rich architectural heritage, showcasing Romanesque, Gothic, and Manueline styles.
The tour continues to Coimbra, where the University of Coimbra, one of the oldest in the world, awaits. The grandeur of its historical buildings, including the Old Cathedral and the Santa Clara Monastery, offers a glimpse into the city’s illustrious past. As you wander through these ancient halls, the stories of scholars and monks echo through the ages, providing a captivating experience for both adults and children alike. A recent review from June 2024 highlights the tour’s ability to captivate visitors of all ages:
The best day, with a fantastic host - James was an outstanding tour guide who deviated from the Coimbra itinerary to give our daughter (a scholar of ancient Rome) a tour of the amazing ruins of a Roman city in nearby Conimbra. The city was occupied in the 100s and the mosaics are fantastic, as is the museum. Our first stop in Tomar was equally wonderful, as we toured the romantic castle headquarters of the Knights Templar (circa 1100) and the baroque convent within its walls. Again, we loved James.
Coastal Charms and Cultural Riches
On December 29th, the partly cloudy skies set a serene backdrop for a day of exploration. Begin your adventure with the Aveiro and Coimbra Tour, a delightful journey from the coastal town of Aveiro to the historic heart of Coimbra. This tour, running from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM, offers a perfect blend of coastal beauty and cultural immersion. In Aveiro, often referred to as the “Venice of Portugal,” you can enjoy a leisurely cruise along its picturesque canals, taking in the charming bridges and colorful moliceiro boats.
As you make your way to Coimbra, the tour provides ample opportunities to explore the city’s historical landmarks. The Biblioteca Joanina, with its stunning baroque architecture, is a must-visit, offering a glimpse into the intellectual legacy of the University of Coimbra. The tour’s flexibility allows families to tailor their experience, ensuring that both parents and children can enjoy the sights at their own pace. A review from October 2024 captures the essence of this tour:
Aveiro and Coimbra University - Amazing! - This tour was outstanding! Ines and Gisela were amazing guides and Ines was a great driver. Ines’s knowledge of the area and region were remarkable. My husband is a photographer and she did everything she could to get him good shots of the countryside, Flamingoes, and salt plains. We were so impressed with both of them and this was the best tour we’ve taken in Portugal (we’ve been on 3 so far). I would highly recommend this tour and ensure you have tickets to the Coimbra University. This is not to be missed. From the bottom of our hearts, Obrigado, Ines and Gisela!
