A Stroll Through Time: Colmar’s Enchanting Streets

As a museum curator with a passion for history and storytelling, I am always on the lookout for destinations that offer a blend of cultural richness and family-friendly exploration. Colmar, a picturesque town in the Alsace region of France, promised just that. Our family embarked on the Colmar Walking Tour to uncover the fairytale streets and historical treasures that this charming town has to offer.

Discovering Colmar’s Architectural Marvels

Our journey began with a leisurely stroll through Colmar’s cobblestone streets, where every corner seemed to whisper tales of the past. The Maison Pfister, a 15th-century architectural gem, immediately caught our attention. Its dragon-scale turrets and Renaissance art were a visual feast, sparking the imagination of our children as they envisioned knights and dragons from long ago.

The House of Heads, adorned with 106 expressive masks, was another highlight. This 16th-century Renaissance masterpiece now houses a luxurious hotel and Michelin-starred restaurant, but its historical significance remains intact. The intricate details of the masks fascinated us, each one telling a unique story of the town’s vibrant past.

Immersing in Colmar’s Artistic Heritage

Colmar is not only a haven for architecture enthusiasts but also a treasure trove for art lovers. The Dominican Church, with its austere architecture, houses the “Madonna of the Rose Bush” by Schongauer. This masterpiece captivated us with its rich symbolism and historical depth, offering a moment of reflection amidst our exploration.

We continued our artistic journey at the Schwendi Fountain, where Bartholdi’s bronze statue of Lazarus von Schwendi stands proudly. The statue celebrates the arrival of pinot gris grapes in Alsace, blending art, history, and viticulture in one captivating landmark. Our children were intrigued by the story of the Tokay vine, adding an educational layer to our adventure.

Savoring Colmar’s Culinary Delights

No visit to Colmar would be complete without indulging in its culinary offerings. The Covered Market, a 19th-century riverside treasure, was a sensory delight. We sampled Alsatian delicacies, from savory tarts to sweet bredele cookies, each bite a testament to the region’s rich culinary heritage.

Our tour concluded at the Champ de Mars park, where Europe’s largest wooden horse carousel awaited. The laughter of our children as they rode the carousel was the perfect ending to our Colmar adventure. Surrounded by lush promenades and Bartholdi’s first public monument, we felt a deep connection to the town’s history and culture.
