Colon Tour | Agua Clara Lock Neo Panamax Visitor Center\n\nDuration 7 Hours\n\nAgua Clara Lock\n\nThe impressive engineering feat of the Expanded Panama Canal continues to astonish both locals and tourists alike. A notable fact is the sheer volume of materials used in its construction. To put it into perspective, the 192 thousand tons of steel used for the Third Set of Locks is enough to construct 19 replicas of the Eiffel Tower.\n\nFort San Lorenzo\n\nThe authorization for Castillo de San Lorenzo dates back to 1564. However, typical of many Spanish crown projects in the New World, it took four decades to initiate construction. The strategic location chosen was atop a cliff, providing cannons with an optimal position to defend the entrance to the Charges River and allowing for a clear, extensive view of the sea. The initial fortification, like others from early Panama, was constructed using the ancient double palisade method, which involved two parallel wooden walls filled with earth and topped with a roof made of woven reed and palm thatch.
