Short but interesting train ride, tour of Panama City - I did a cruise ship excursion that included the Agua Clara Lock "Canal Expansion" Visitors' Center, the train ride to Panama City, and return by bus to Colon. The Lock Center has a nice view overlooking the canal locks and Gatun Lake, shows an interesting 12-minute film on the history and future of the canal, and a short nature hike via steps through a patch of rainforest, which I enjoyed. Most people in our group seemed to spend their time in the tiny gift shop or eating snacks. The Panama Canal Railway was built in the mid 19th century, with the current train cars refurbished for tourists. I paid extra to ride in the "Dome Car" with glass windows above, which admitted more light and a greater view (when it wasn't raining.) I ended up moving to the outdoor "smoking" car to take pictures, and that was very enjoyable for a photographer who didn't mind standing. The seats in the "Dome Car" are constructed facing each other across tables, and are very tight and uncomfortable with no leg room if you are over the age of twelve. A small snack box (potato chips, shortbread cookies, raisins) was provided. In Panama City we were treated to a very enjoyable tour including views of the skyline from the causeway-connected former islands followed by a ride through downtown (on a Sunday, so no traffic.) This was a nice excursion for someone like me who wanted to say afterwards that I had done it!
