Discovering the Wonders of El Palmar National Park

As a family travel writer, I’m always on the lookout for unique experiences that can bring families closer together while exploring the wonders of nature. When I heard about the El Palmar National Park in Colón, I knew it was a must-visit destination for our next family adventure. With its rich biodiversity and the promise of spotting some fascinating wildlife, I packed up the kids and my husband, and we set off for a day of exploration and bonding.

Upon arriving at the park, we were immediately struck by the beauty of the Yatay Palm savannas. The towering palms swayed gently in the breeze, creating a serene backdrop for our adventure. As we continued our exploration, we ventured onto the path leading to the Historic Site “Calera del Palmar.” This trail took us through a shaded area, providing a welcome respite from the summer heat. The cool river air was refreshing, and the kids enjoyed learning about the historical significance of the site. We took a moment to appreciate the stunning views of the Uruguay River from the viewpoints along the way.

A Day of Family Fun and Unforgettable Memories

One of the highlights of our visit was the wildlife watching experience. We timed our visit to coincide with the late afternoon, as recommended, and were rewarded with sightings of capybaras and vizcachas near the campsite. The kids were absolutely fascinated by the monkey lizards we encountered, some of which were over a meter long!

While the beach area wasn’t the most picturesque, it provided a much-needed opportunity to cool off in the summer heat. We took a dip in the water and enjoyed a picnic lunch under the shade of the trees. The campsite itself was well-equipped, with a grocery store offering everything from cooked meals to barbecue supplies. It was a perfect spot for families to relax and recharge.

Our day at El Palmar National Park was a delightful blend of adventure, education, and family bonding. The park’s diverse landscapes and abundant wildlife provided endless opportunities for exploration and discovery.
