• Gangaramaya (Vihara) Buddhist Temple - Begin the exciting day with a hotel pick-up by a Sanota Walkers representative. You will then be taken to visit the revered Gangarama Temple, located on the scenic Beira Lake in the heart of Colombo. Established around 120 years ago, this temple is one of Sri Lanka’s most significant Buddhist sites. Initially a small hermitage on marshy land in the 19th century, it has expanded to include several impressive buildings and is now an internationally recognized place of worship, a learning center, and an assembly hall for monks. It also features a museum, library, and Relic chamber, among other facilities.
• Seema Malakaya Temple - Seema Malaka is a Buddhist temple in Colombo, Sri Lanka, primarily used for meditation and relaxation rather than worship. Located on Beira Lake, the temple was originally built in the late 19th century.
• Galle Face Green - After experiencing the blend of old and new at Fort & Pettah, it’s time to visit the renowned Galle Face Green and unwind to the soothing sound of waves. Overlooking the Indian Ocean, adjacent to the beautiful Galle Face beach and the historic Galle Face Hotel (known as Asia’s Emerald on the Green since 1864), this elegant promenade is lined with swaying palm trees and is a popular spot for both locals and tourists. Known affectionately as “The Green,” it is a place where history meets modernity, with cannons from the old Colombo fort now displayed for admiration. Families and children play sports, fly kites, health enthusiasts enjoy evening walks, and visitors savor delicious local street food from numerous stalls.
• St Anthony’s Shrine - St. Anthony’s Shrine is a Roman Catholic church in the Archdiocese of Colombo, Sri Lanka. Located in Kochchikade, Kotahena, Colombo 13, it is dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua and is designated as a national shrine and minor basilica.
• Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara - The Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, or Kelaniya Temple, is a Buddhist temple in Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, situated seven miles from Colombo. The Chief Incumbent is Venerable Professor Kollupitiye Mahinda Sangharakkhitha Thera.
• Colombo Fort - Notable places to visit include the Fort and Pettah towns. In the 16th century, the Portuguese used this area, now known as Fort or Kottuwa (formerly Kolonthota), as a trading post and developed it into a fortified base. In the 17th century, the Dutch conquered the fort, partially demolished it, and rebuilt it to their specifications. By the 19th century, the British took control and, deeming a military threat unlikely, demolished the fort to allow urban development. However, several buildings from the Dutch and British eras remain, including the Dutch Hospital, now featuring high-end boutiques and dining, and the Old General Post Office, built in 1895 with Edwardian architecture. Pettah, or Pitta-Kottuwa (meaning outer fort), is a bustling town near Colombo Fort.
• Independence Square - Next, visit the special Independence Square, located just minutes from the Old Parliament building. This site commemorates Sri Lanka’s independence from colonial rule and is where a podium was constructed in 1948 to mark the beginning of self-rule and the new parliament. Independence Square also houses a museum showcasing the history of those who fought for Sri Lanka’s independence.
