Excellent Tour in Colombo - We actually took an overnight tour to Kandy, Sri Lanka. Communication with the tour company was excellent. We knew exactly where to meet our tour guide. He was an amazing driver/tour guide with good English. Very caring, knowledgeable good person. We managed to see a lot in a short period of time. The van was comfortable, plenty of room for us. Highly recommended company.

Warning - Use Someone Else!!! - We had a small group (10 people) ‘tour’ to Sigiriya, a UNESCO world heritage site that is a rock fortress with extensive palace and garden ruins and Dambulla cave temple. This turned out to not be a tour as described at all, but just a bus ride. The “guide” said nothing during the entire four hour ride to the site, other than telling us the name of the mountain with a large Buddha statue after I pointed it out to others on the bus. He actually slept most of the trip! No information about the area we were in, the history of Sigiriya, what the site entails, or how guides work at the site. When we arrived at Sigiriya, we stopped for photos at a viewpoint, which actually wasn’t the greatest, and the guide discouraged people from climbing the site. Instead, he pushed a Tuk-Tuk tour around the rock, never describing what’s in the complex. Fortunately, my husband and I and another couple said we’re going to go in and climb. Our ‘guide” took us in to get tickets and gave us a guide at the site, never explaining anything about arrangements. It was extremely hot (over 90F) and steep, and other men at the site showed up to help us. We refused but the other couple accepted. When we tipped after the tour, the helpers told them they had a higher rate than they were given and insisted on more. None of this was explained ahead by our worthless “guide”. The site is extensive and impressive, with the palace and garden ruins largely at ground level. The rest of the group never entered the site after a 4 hour journey because the Tuk-Tuk was pushed and nothing was explained to them. We didn’t tell them what they missed. Dambulla was just a quick stop with time for some pictures. Despite the heat, no water was supplied on this full day trip. There was a cooler onboard but I was told there was no water when I asked. We were concerned about having enough water with us to make the climb. The tour description said we’d stop for lunch (at extra expense) but the only stop we made was a rest stop both ways that had some pastries. Our “guide”, however, brought his lunch and happily ate it on the bus when he was awake. Sigiriya and Dambulla are definitely worth seeing and require the long journey to get there from Colombo. Just be sure to take a real tour so you get full value and enjoyment from the experience. This was not at all the case with Sazy Lanka.
