- Temple of Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam Kovil - The Sri Kailasanathar Swami Devasthanam temple is situated behind the Colombo Fort railway station. It is also known by other names such as Captain’s Garden Hindu Temple and Kapikaawatha Shivan Temple. Many believe it to be the oldest Hindu temple in Colombo, with a history dating back to the 17th century. Although the buildings are not that old, the classic architecture and sculptures are very impressive. Your chauffeur will guide you through the temple, providing fascinating information.
- Gangaramaya (Vihara) Buddhist Temple - This vibrant Buddhist temple, with a history of 120 years, is the most visited temple in Colombo. The temple houses a small museum with a collection of various artifacts and antiques from Sri Lanka and different Buddhist cultures such as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Thai. The “Seema Malaka,” an assembly hall for monks designed by the famous architect Geoffrey Bawa, is located on a lake near the temple premises and is a popular venue in Colombo. Your chauffeur will accompany you with information.
- Independence Memorial Hall - Located in Independence Square (formerly Torrington Square) in Colombo 7, Cinnamon Gardens, the Independence Memorial Hall was built to commemorate independence from the British in the 1940s. The monument marks the location where the formal ceremony for self-rule began, with the opening of the first parliament by Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, on February 4, 1948. The Hall is designed based on the architecture of the Magul Maduwa (meeting hall of the last king of Sri Lanka) in Kandy. The columns and pillars are adorned with traditional Sri Lankan carvings and paintings. It is a popular venue among travelers in Colombo. You will stop there on the tour to learn more about the area and its history. It is a wonderful place in Colombo to remember your visit.
- Pettah Floating Market - The Pettah market streets are a hub for locals to shop for everything they need at various qualities and prices. The place appears chaotic, with narrow market streets full of locals searching for necessities, street sellers shouting, and tuk-tuks running all over. You will be taken through the market streets in a Tuk Tuk on this tour, allowing you to experience everything mentioned above.
- Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque - The Jami-Alfar Mosque on 2nd Cross Street is painted with red and white stripes, resembling an old-fashioned, candy-striped barber’s shop. Its color scheme makes it hard to miss among the other rather shabby Pettah buildings. Over 100 years old, the mosque was constructed in 1908. Just inside the entrance, an inscription reads that the architect was H.L. Saib Lebbe. A friendly security guard may allow you inside (even if you are a woman) to view the washing ponds and the rear view of the mosque’s clock tower. Women are not permitted to enter the prayer halls. The mosque is soon to undergo expansion to become a four-story complex catering to between 7,000 and 8,000 worshippers at one time. However, the façade will retain its current character. Avoid visiting on Fridays when it is busiest.
- Colombo Fort - The skyline of Colombo’s Fort has evolved over the centuries, but remnants of colonial and local rule are still visible. Some of the largest, oldest, and newest buildings are located here. The Clock Tower was a lighthouse over 150 years ago. The sprawling President’s House features a boulder engraved with the Portuguese Coat of Arms from 1505. Most of the buildings, though refurbished by the British, have retained the aesthetic and architectural features inherited from the Dutch and Portuguese.
