Highlights
  • Villa Troubetzkoy - constructed in the mid-1800s, this villa is named after Russian prince Alexander Troubetzkoy.

The prince used dynamite to demolish a large cliff, earning him the nickname “turbascogli” from the locals of Blevio. The villa features steeply pitched roofs with distinctive dormer windows and a daring elevator that descends to the lake from the Larian road.

  • Villa Cademartori - This three-story building includes a turret on the right side. The main floor is distinguished by a series of gabled windows and is highlighted by a terrace adorned with statues, supported by a trabeated Doric portico that serves as a sort of pronaos for the main entrance.
The surrounding park is notable for its ancient trees, including a massive plane tree and a valuable cedar of Lebanon.
  • Laglio - We will pass through Laglio and the famous villa owned by George Clooney.
At one time, Villa Oleandra was owned by the family of John Heinz, the founder of the globally recognized sauce brand. His heirs sold the estate to Clooney, who paid 10 million dollars for it. The actor made a savvy investment: the property is now worth about ten times that amount.
  • Cernobbio - As we sail towards Cernobbio, we will visit Villa d’Este, a Renaissance patrician residence located on the shores of Lake Como in the municipality of Cernobbio. Both the villa and its 25-acre park have been significantly altered from their original design, which was intended as a summer residence for Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio. Since 1873, the complex has operated as a luxury hotel and is recognized as one of Italy’s historic places.

Additional Information

You will sail on Lake Como aboard the famous Mas 28. In the years preceding the outbreak of the “Great War”, the Italian Royal Navy formed a group of special troops equipped with torpedo bombers: the so-called MAS. The acronym MAS stands for armed torpedo motorboat. In fact, these small motor boats, no longer than 10 metres, were equipped with two torpedoes which were launched against the large ships by exploiting surprise and speed. The MAS could even reach 40 knots and like a pack of wolves they sailed at night to the ports and bays where the enemy warships were anchored, to then exploit the surprise effect and attack with the favor of light. Among the famous names that this elite corps could count was that of the poet Grabiele D’Annunzio, who was a member of the crew of the three MAS that carried out the Hoax of Buccari.
