It’s not only the largest port on the Black Sea, but also ranks third throughout Europe. Furthermore, with a population of 400,000, it boasts the fourth largest city in Romania. Greek settlers originally founded Constanta, naming it Tomis in the 6th century BC, and utilized it as a Black Sea port for commerce with the interiors. Later, it was renamed in honor of Constantina, the niece of Constantine the Great (274-337). Moving forward, it remained a prosperous port city well into the 10th and 11th centuries, establishing trade relations with the Byzantine Empire and the city of Genoa.
