-
Cooke City - The tour starts just outside the Yellowstone Trading Post, located at 207 Main St, Cooke City. To continue, proceed east on Beartooth Highway.
-
The 45th Parallel - In about a minute, there is a pull-out with an interesting sign stating “You’re Standing on the 45th Parallel.” This latitude circle marks the midpoint between the Equator and the North Pole.
-
Clarks Fork Trail - Let’s discuss the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone River, whose Upper Fork runs parallel to much of the Beartooth Highway from Cooke City to its junction with the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway.
-
Crazy Creek Falls - In a few minutes, a small parking area for Crazy Creek Falls will appear. It is directly across the highway from the Crazy Creek Campground but can be easily missed, so it will be pointed out when closer.
-
Beartooth Highway - The Beartooth Highway traverses some of the most untamed and picturesque landscapes in America. Due to heavy snowfall and strong winds, it is not feasible for road crews to keep the roads open in winter, so it typically opens each year from the Friday before Memorial Day through early October. Expect to see lingering snow in higher elevations until early to mid-July, and snowstorms can occur at any time, even in summer.
-
Beartooth Basin Summer Ski Area - It’s worth stopping for the views of Twin Lakes, and if it’s early summer, watch dedicated skiers descending into the basin.

-
Clay Butte Lookout - If time permits, a three-mile drive to the lookout tower is highly recommended. The road is unpaved with many turns, making it unsuitable for RVs or trailers, but it should be easily navigable for most passenger cars.
-
Beartooth Lake - The climb up to Beartooth Pass begins here, with many of the most spectacular views still ahead.
-
Beartooth Basin Summer Ski Area - It’s worth stopping for the views of Twin Lakes, and if it’s early summer, watch dedicated skiers descending into the basin.
-
Lake Creek Road - A beautiful waterfall is nearby, though unmarked and easy to miss. It will be pointed out when closer.
-
Red Lodge - Like many small western mountain towns, Red Lodge was established around mining. James George, also known as Yankee Jim, discovered significant coal deposits while searching for gold in upper Rock Creek in 1866.
-
Rock Creek Canyon - The descent to Red Lodge begins, and while the best views are behind, lovely canyon views still lie ahead. The route follows Rock Creek, which originates high in the Beartooths and flows over 55 miles to join the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone River, just before it merges into the main Yellowstone River.
