Setting Sail to Managua

As a seasoned traveler and wave chaser, I often find myself drawn to the coastal towns of Central America. This time, however, I decided to take a detour from my usual surf-centric adventures and explore the cultural heart of Nicaragua. The Managua Highlights Tour was the perfect opportunity to dive into the rich history and vibrant life of Managua, all while enjoying the laid-back vibe that I love so much.

The journey began at the Corinto cruise ship port, where I was greeted by a friendly driver who whisked me away in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle. The drive to Managua was a scenic one, with lush landscapes rolling by as we made our way to the city. It was a refreshing change of pace from the usual salt and sand, and I found myself eagerly anticipating the cultural treasures that awaited.

Exploring the Heart of Managua

Our first stop was the Palacio Nacional, a grand building that houses the national museum and art gallery. As someone who spends most of his time in the ocean, it was a treat to immerse myself in the artistic expressions of Nicaragua. The works of Arnold Belkin, Armando Morales, and Leoncio Saénz were particularly captivating, offering a glimpse into the soul of the country.

Next, we ventured to Loma de Tiscapa, a spot that offers breathtaking views across all of Managua. Standing there, with the city sprawling beneath me, I felt a sense of connection to this place that was both new and familiar. It reminded me of the feeling I get when I find the perfect wave – a moment of pure, unadulterated joy.

The Santiago of Managua Cathedral was another highlight, with its neoclassical design and rich history. Designed by Belgian architects, the cathedral’s architecture was inspired by the church of Saint-Sulpice in Paris. It was fascinating to see such European influences in the heart of Nicaragua, a testament to the country’s diverse cultural tapestry.

A Taste of Local Life

After the guided tour, we had some free time to explore Puerto Salvador Allende. This vibrant area was a feast for the senses, with colorful shops and tantalizing aromas wafting from local eateries. I took the opportunity to indulge in some retail therapy and sample the local cuisine, which was as rich and diverse as the culture itself.

As the day drew to a close, our driver returned us to the port, ensuring we had ample time to relax before boarding the ship. Reflecting on the day’s adventures, I realized that this excursion was more than just a tour – it was a journey into the heart of Nicaragua, a chance to connect with its people and its history in a way that was both meaningful and memorable.
