Highlights
  • The English Market - There has been a market on this site since 1788 and its official name is the Princes Street

Market.

The reclaiming of marshy lands strongly influenced the development of the market. The

channels in between were in

filled to form many of today’s st

reets such as St Patrick’s, Grand Parade

and Princes Street, proving ideal in forming the market.

  • St Patrick Street - The street once formed a curving part of the River Lee and was initially turned into a canal, alongside

which quays and sh

ops sprang, until, in 1780, it was completely filled in to form the street it is today.

  • Butter Museum - The Cork Butter Museum is located in the building that used to house the Cork Butter

Market.Opened in 1770, it became the largest butter exc

hange in the world and traded for 150

years, exporting Cork butter worldwide and bringing great wealth to the city.

  • St. Anne’s Church - In the Shandon district of the city, is one of Cork’s most famous landmarks, the pepper pot like steeple of
St. Anne’s Church, which at a massive 170 feet has continued to dominate Cork’s skyline since 1722.
  • St Fin Barre’s Cathedral - St Fin Barre is the legendary Patron Saint of Cork, who arrived in the seventh century and built the

monastic set

tlement at the mouth of the River Lee, which became an important portal from county

to city.

  • Elizabeth Fort - Elizabeth Fort was built in 1601, following Queen Elizabeth I’s order for five star

    shaped forts to be

built outside the

defence walls to protect the coastal towns of Ireland.

My own on-the-fly tour was far more successful - App doesn’t work well. Installed it before I arrived and tried to use it. It would stop and then I’d have to start over. After about 30 minutes of frustration, I downloaded the audio files, listened to them over a sandwich and made my own tour. The narrator’s voice (what little I heard) was clear and understandable. The directions to each stop were not helpful hence making my own tour.

Total waste of money - Unfortunately, this was an awful experience. We could find no obvious way to get to download links. I tried contacting CityWalksTours, but there was no answer. We eventually talked with someone from Viator. They were somewhat hidden in an area called “before you go” but you had to expand it. Once there, the “links” were neither clickable nor could I copy and paste using an iPhone. A very long web address had to be manually typed in after downloading an app. Then, the app continually crashed, forcing it to be reopened and restarting the tour from the beginning each time. After multiple crashes, we gave up. We got through the first couple of stops after several attempts, which were informative and well spoken. We had to give up on it though. This was a total waste of money.
