- Monasterboice Monastic Site - Situated in County Louth, this early Christian monastic site was established in the late 5th century by St. Buithe, a follower of St. Patrick. The site flourished as a hub of religion and learning until the founding of nearby Mellifont Abbey in 1142. Monasterboice is famous for its remarkable high crosses, including Muiredach’s High Cross, regarded as one of the finest examples of Celtic stone carving in Ireland. The site also includes a round tower, which once served as a refuge during Viking invasions. - Mellifont Abbey - This location is the site of Ireland’s first Cistercian monastery, founded in 1142 by St. Malachy, the Archbishop of Armagh. The abbey was instrumental in the spread of the Cistercian order throughout Ireland and served as a model for other monasteries. Renowned for its unique architecture, Mellifont featured a distinctive octagonal lavabo. The abbey prospered until the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII in the 16th century, which led to its abandonment and ruin. Today, the remains of Mellifont Abbey, including the Chapter House and lavabo, stand as a testament to its historical and religious importance.
