The biggest cellars in the whole world are, with no doubt, situated in Cricova, Moldova, only a few kilometers north of Chisinau. Here, underground lies a real city of wine – with wide streets, warehouses, tasting-rooms and so on. In Moldova only Cricova cellars employ the strict classic French technology of champagne wine production. So Cricova is a highlight of any visit to Moldova.

Additional Information

Experience a wine tasting tour at the Cricova Winery Moldova, a unique underground city with wide avenues, storage facilities, and sampling rooms stretching up to 120 km in total length. It is home to the notable ‘Grand Cellars of Cricova,’ host to a diverse array of wines at The National Oenotec. Among its distinct exhibits deems the ‘Jerusalem of Easter’ and ‘Jan Becher’ liqueur, both dated back to 1902, joined by a selection of 158 other brands sourced from Burgundy, Moselle, Tokay, and the Rhine. The overall collection, representing the establishment and Moldova itself, amasses to approximately 1.3 million bottles.
The Cricova cellars have a rich history; it’s rumored that in 1966, the astronaut Yuri Gagarin entered the cellars and only emerged two days later with help. Notably, Russian President Vladimir Putin marked his 50th birthday celebrations within these cellars.

An essential place to visit while in Moldova - I was visiting Moldova for the first time and wanted to see a lot in a relatively short period of time. Therefore it was very convenient to book guided tours including this one to the Cricova Winery which is one of the essential places to experience. I found the tour very interesting as the place has a rich history and I also got to taste several types of wine together with people from other tours. I also enjoyed talking about current day life in Moldova with Liliya who drove me there.
