Dive into Adventure: Our Family’s Manatee Encounter in Crystal River
When I heard about the Family Manatee Tour in Crystal River, I knew it was a must-try for my family. Join me as I recount our magical day swimming with manatees and exploring the springs, guided by the wonderful Hina and Dylan.
A Warm Welcome to Crystal River
As a family travel writer, I’m always on the lookout for unique experiences that can bring families closer together. So, when I heard about the Family Manatee Tour in Crystal River, I knew it was something I had to try with my own family. From the moment we arrived, the experience was seamless. The entrance was clearly marked, and parking was conveniently located right outside the building. We were greeted by Hina, our friendly guide, who informed us that the rest of our group was ready to go. This meant we could start our adventure 20 minutes early, giving us extra time to search for manatees!
The facility was well-equipped with cubbies for our belongings and changing rooms to slip into our wetsuits. Hina then drove us to Pete’s Pier, where we met our captain, Dylan. Both Hina and Dylan were incredibly welcoming, setting the tone for a relaxed and enjoyable day on the water.
Swimming with Gentle Giants
Once aboard, we were provided with snorkels and given a quick briefing on how to interact with the manatees respectfully. As someone who’s not the most confident swimmer, I appreciated the pool noodles they provided to help us float and stay still in the water. It wasn’t long before we encountered a mother manatee and her playful cub. The cub was particularly curious, swimming up to us, grabbing our arms, and even coming face-to-face with us. Hina was fantastic at keeping us calm and ensuring everyone had a chance to enjoy the interaction.
The experience was magical, and I was thrilled to see my kids’ faces light up with excitement. We were free to get back into the boat whenever we needed a break or some water, making the experience stress-free and enjoyable for everyone. Hina also captured some incredible photos, which were available for purchase afterward, allowing us to take home memories of this unforgettable day.
Exploring the Springs and Wildlife
After our time with the manatees, we ventured to the Jurassic spring, where we could dive down and observe the fish and turtles. Dylan guided us back into the boat and took us on a tour of the spring, pointing out an alligator, various birds, and more turtles. Both Dylan and Hina were fountains of local knowledge, answering all our questions and even recommending some great local eateries.
The highlight of the tour was when Dylan and Hina took extra time to let us explore a rarely clear cove. It was a special treat that added an unexpected twist to our adventure. Their passion and knowledge truly elevated the experience, making it much more than just a manatee tour. I wholeheartedly recommend this tour to any family looking to connect with nature and each other. Just be sure to ask for Hina and Dylan—they’re the best!
