A Journey Through Time: From Acapulco to Mexico City

As a former university professor of European history, I have always been drawn to the stories that ancient structures and historical sites tell. My recent journey from Acapulco to Mexico City, with a stop in Cuernavaca, was no exception. This trip, aptly named An Explorer’s Route, promised a blend of serene travel and rich historical experiences, and it delivered on both fronts.

The journey began in the coastal city of Acapulco, a place known for its stunning beaches and vibrant nightlife. However, my focus was on the historical tapestry that lay ahead. The drive itself was a peaceful transition from the bustling coast to the heart of Mexico, offering glimpses of the diverse landscapes that define this beautiful country. As we approached Cuernavaca, the anticipation of exploring the Palacio de Cortes grew.

Discovering the Palacio de Cortes

Cuernavaca, often referred to as the “City of Eternal Spring,” welcomed us with its mild climate and lush greenery. The highlight of our stop was undoubtedly the Palacio de Cortes, a fortress-like structure that stands as a testament to the region’s complex history. Built in 1526 by Hernan Cortes, the palace was constructed on the ruins of an Aztec palace, symbolizing the tumultuous period of conquest and colonization.
