Additional Information

The East 4x4 tour has a little bit of everything and is suitable for everyone!

The First stop is Pico Do Areiro, the 3rd highest peak on the island, 1811m above sea level.

There are usually very dramatic views and we tend to spend a fair amount of time up there.

After that, we venture to the North side of the island, into the more rural areas such as Ribeiro Frio and Faial where you can find hints of Laurissilva forest.

Next is Santana.

This is where you will find the traditional, authentic “A-Frame” houses you might have seen online or in guide books.

We will see lots of agricultural terraces, we will meet locals and we will have lunch at one of our partner restaurants. (optional extra, not included in price and highly recommended)

After lunch we usually like to include some wine or rum tasting depending on the time we have and what the group is like.

It´s a great “first tour” for everybody who likes big views, culture, food and fun!

Great Day - Booking was straightforward and the email confirmation gave us details of pick up, driver and what we would need. ( We didn't need a light jacket on the day but proper shoes are required). Pickup, by Fabio, was as arranged and he introduced us to the other travellers ( lovely, young American couple). Fabio gave us a great day. There was some factual information but it was not an 'information overload' that you know is too much to take in. He gave us interesting stories and lots of cultural information - what places he went to as a child, what activities families in Madeira partake in and places they visit. He answered all our questions. He did it all whilst taking us around many places in the East of the island, stopping occasionally to just look around and at specific viewpoints and places of interest. Fabio did well to avoid a lot of crowds ( with his timings and local knowledge). Our visit to the traditional home in Santana was a complete privilege - thank you. Poncha in the terrific tasca in the mountains was delicious (and only 1 was needed). Fabulous stop for lunch and Fabio's recommendations were spot on! And a stop for a tot of rum was welcome. Absolutely terrific scenery and we were so pleased that we did the tour with Hit The Road Madeira. Thank you Fabio (and great job organising the weather for us! 😉)

Something for everyone, great coffee, the levadas, magnificent views which were constantly changing, rum and poncha too. Tiago the driver was full of information and personally engaging exchanging life experiences and enriching the whole day. A skillful and cool headed driver able to stay away from the crowds and make the day special.

The west coast with Tiago - We had a great tour today with Tiago, he showed us many spots (on- and offroad) with a lot of patience and stories. We went to the highest peak, drank some great poncha, learned a lot about native and invasive nature on the north- and southside of the island. Had a great lunch with an even better view and came home so happy. We will hopefully meet again for either the white- or black pearl drive ;) !

Experience Madeira Through a Local's Perspective - We wanted a stress-free way to see and learn about Madeira and Fernando from Hit the Road Madeira and gave us just that. He is authentic, funny, knowledgeable, and genuine. He welcomed us with open arms. Fernando was truly invested in us having an excellent experience. We reserved the full day East Island Tour. We saw panoramic views and vistas that only locals know about. We learned about Portuguese and Madeirian history and culture. Fernando has a unique way of immersively guiding, entertaining, and educating you in an effortless fashion. Fernando even helped us plan our driving route to explore the west side of the island the next day on our own. If you are like us and plan all your own travel adventures and explorations, give yourself the gift of a guided tour with Hit the Road Madeira. You will learn, see, and experience Madeira through a local's perspective.  That is the difference between a tourist and a traveler! Obrigada Fernando!

I did both East and West Tours - East of Madeira | Full Day 4x4 Tour I did both East and West Full Day Tours Awesome experience beyond words! I had the same tour guide, Fàbio on both days, he’s fantastic, very knowledgeable about the history and ecosystem of Madeira. I’ve learnt a lot from him. He was very strategic in planning our itinerary so we were always one step ahead of the crowds. I enjoyed every minute of the two full day tours and the company of other travellers. Made friends with a newlywed couple from UK, the husband is a very artistic photographer, loved his photos. Highly recommend you check out their informative YouTube channel first before you choose your tour group

Great day out! - I spent a long time researching jeep tour companies and kept coming back to Hit The Road, and so glad I did. Communication was excellent and Fabio was our guide for the day. The weather was really on our side and our 4 other tour companions in the jeep were great, so we all had a terrific day 😀 Saw so many beautiful places, as you can see from the pictures. I wouldnt hesitate using this company again. Thank you to all 👌and until next time!

Memorable experience, lovely guide - Our guide, Fabio, was a knowledgeable and friendly host on our trip to the east of Madeira. A Funchal native, he knew all the tricks to stay one step ahead of the tourist busses and tours, so as to not get stuck in the tourist trap areas. Instead, he took us to authentic places - local, roadside Poncha spots, jungle shortcuts on the royal trail, amazing vista points, and even a visit to a genuine Santana house (not a trinket shop). He had an easy going nature and let the groups desires inform the tour, but still kept us on a timetable to ensure we saw everything. Our group included us two, and four other people, and it made for a lovely time. We got to know each other in a more personal way than a 30 person tour bus. We took this trip while on our honeymoon and it wad easily one of the highlights of our trip to Portugal. The Hit the Road Madeira group cannot be recommended enough.

Too Long of a Day! - Let me first say Hugo was an amazing host and shared a wealth of Information about the island!! But, 6 adults crammed into an older Land Rover was very unpleasant especially for the people sitting in the back jump seats. This tour is get in, get out at the various stops the guide chooses along the way. Way more times than I wanted. The ride up and down the mountain is met with sharp turns that the person suiting in the 2nd row middle seat gets tossed back and forth. At the end of the day, if you love the magnificent views and naturist aspects, this tour is for you.
