Highlights
  • Curtea de Arges Monastery - Situated at the end of a boulevard lined with centuries-old linden trees, Curtea de Arges Monastery stands as the foremost pilgrimage and prayer site in Arges county, dedicated to the “Assumption of the Virgin.”

Established during the reign of voivode Neagoe Basarab between 1512 and 1517, the monastery is entwined with the renowned Romanian legend, “The Legend of Master Manole.” Also known as the Episcopal Church, due to its status as an Episcopal See from 1739 to 1748, this place of worship measures 18 meters in length, 10 meters in width, and 25 meters in height. Interestingly, the naos and the pronaos are divided not by a door, but by a door frame set between two columns.

  • Poenari Citadel - The ruins of Poenari Fortress, associated with Vlad Tepes (Vlad the Impaler), perch high on a cliff overlooking the Arges River at the base of the Carpathian Mountains. Constructed in the early 13th century by the initial Walachian rulers, the castle underwent several name and resident changes over the years before being abandoned and falling into ruin.
  • Vidraru Dam - Vidraru Dam, completed in 1966 on the Argeş River, forms Lake Vidraru. This arch dam was primarily built for hydroelectric power generation. It stands 166 meters tall, with an arch length of 305 meters, and can hold 465 million cubic meters of water. The reservoir’s total shoreline length is 28 km.
  • Balea Lake - Balea Lake ranks among the most visited lakes in Romania. What makes it special? Firstly, the journey to Balea Lake and the breathtaking scenery at the site are remarkable. The lake is a nature reserve, and nearby, in winter, you can find Eastern Europe’s first ice hotel. Like many iconic Romanian locations, Balea Lake is shrouded in an eerie legend. Additionally, in March 2014, Van Damme filmed a beer commercial here and was greatly impressed by the location.
  • Transfagarasan Highway - Jeremy Clarkson once declared this the best road in the world on an episode of Top Gear, likening it to a race track. However, Transfagarasan offers much more than an exhilarating drive; it connects southern Romania with Transylvania, cutting through the imposing Fagaras Mountains via five tunnels and winding roads that required 6,500 tons of dynamite to construct.
  • Castelul De Lut Valea Zanelor - Fairy tales come to life at Castelul de Lut Valea Zanelor!

Nestled in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains in the heart of Transylvania, this quaint Romanian town now boasts a fairytale castle made from clay and sand. The eco-friendly castle, named Castelul de Lut Valea Zenelor, translates to “Clay Castle of the Valley of the Fairies” in English, a perfectly fitting name for these enchanting architectural lodgings.
