Into the Heart of the Jungle

As a seasoned surfer, I’ve spent countless hours chasing the perfect wave, but every now and then, I crave a different kind of adventure. That’s what led me to the lush landscapes of Curubandé de Liberia, where I embarked on the Waterfalls and Hot Springs Adventure. The day began with a warm welcome from our guide, Hernan, whose knowledge of the area was as deep as the ocean I love so much. His passion for the local culture and environment was infectious, and I found myself hanging onto every word as we made our way through the dense jungle.

The hike to La Leona Waterfall was nothing short of magical. Surrounded by vibrant greenery, the sound of cascading water grew louder with each step, building anticipation. The traditional Costa Rican “casado” meal was a feast for the senses, with fresh, local ingredients that spoke to the heart of the country’s culinary traditions. As I savored each bite, I couldn’t help but think of the many beachside meals I’ve enjoyed in my travels, each one a unique reflection of the local culture.

Hernan’s stories of the area’s history and traditions added depth to the meal, making it more than just a lunch break. It was a moment to connect with the land and its people, much like the connections I seek with the ocean and its ever-changing moods. The camaraderie among our group was palpable, and I felt a sense of belonging that only comes from shared experiences in nature.

Relaxation and Rejuvenation

The afternoon brought us to the Cañon de la Vieja Lodge, where the volcanic mud bath and hot springs awaited. As someone who spends a lot of time in the sun and saltwater, the skin-nourishing benefits of the volcanic mud were a welcome treat. I slathered it on, feeling the earth’s minerals work their magic, before rinsing off in the soothing warmth of the hot springs.

The tranquility of the setting was a stark contrast to the adrenaline-fueled surf sessions I’m used to, but it was a welcome change of pace. As I soaked in the natural pools, I reflected on the day’s adventures and the beauty of Costa Rica’s diverse landscapes. Hernan’s surprise bonus experience at the end of the tour was the cherry on top, a special moment that I’ll keep close to my heart.

This tour was a reminder that adventure comes in many forms, and sometimes, stepping away from the waves can lead to unexpected joys.
