- Qorikancha - This convent was constructed on the magnificent Qorikancha, a place of gold, which was the most significant site dedicated to sun worship. Its walls were adorned with gold sheets. The convent is built on a foundation of polished stone structures, renowned as the finest in Cusco, the heart of the Inca Empire. Its entrance is a superb example of Renaissance architecture, and its distinctive baroque tower stands out among the city’s tiled roofs. Like many churches, it houses an important collection of paintings from the Cusquenian School.
- Sacsayhuaman - A remarkable example of Inca military architecture, this fortress was constructed with massive granite slabs to protect the city of Cusco from eastern invaders, known as Antis. Sacsayhuaman, meaning “satisfied falcon” in Quechua, consists of three large terraces arranged in a “zigzag” pattern, flanked by enormous stone walls up to 300 meters long. Due to its proximity and elevation relative to Cusco, and the size of the stones, some reaching 5 meters high and weighing 350 tons, it served as a quarry for certain structures in colonial Cusco.
- Puka Pukara Archaeological Complex - Pukapukara is a spiritual center built on a single limestone outcrop, featuring underground galleries and a semicircular amphitheater for rituals. Puca Pucara, meaning “Red Fortress” in Quechua, is a military construction with stairways, terraces, and large walls, forming part of the defense system of the imperial capital. Both are integral parts of the archaeological circuit of Cusco.
- Tambomachay - Also known as the “Bath of the Inca,” this site was likely a place for water worship and a resting spot for the empire’s monarch. It features an impressive system of aqueducts, canals, and cascades carved in stone, designed to channel water from a nearby spring. Experts believe Tambomachay was also a royal garden, abundant with ornamental vegetation, maintained by a complex canal system.
- Q’enqo - Situated 4 kilometers northeast of Cusco, Q’enqo was a spiritual center of the Incas, built on a unique limestone outcrop. Its underground galleries and semicircular amphitheater served a purely religious purpose, hosting ceremonies in honor of major deities such as the sun, moon, mountains, and earth. Q’enqo also houses the Intihuatana, an astronomical observatory used to determine the sun’s position and predict seasonal changes.
