Sacsayhuaman can be variously translated as ‘speckled falcon’ or ‘speckled head’. The last interpretation refers to the belief that the city of Cusco was set out in the form of a puma whose head was the hill of Sacsayhuaman. The origins are uncertain but the fortress is generally attributed to the period of Inca Pachacuti, the man who essentially founded the Inca empire.

The Historic Center of Cusco is a remarkable blend of Inca and Hispanic architectural styles. This portion of the city has been continuously occupied since the 14th century. Historic accounts and recent satellite images reveal that the city’s initial design resembled a puma.

The arrival of the Spanish resulted in an amalgamation of artistic, architectural, pictorial, and folkloric elements, coupled with a blend of human characteristics from each culture. A prominent feature of this fusion is the architecture, as demonstrated by the carved stone materials used in the construction of colonial houses, palaces, churches, and convents. These were often built directly on top of ancient Inca walls and structures.
