CUSCO – WIÑAYWAYNA - INTI PUNKU - MACHU PICCHU
Inca Trail - Early in the morning, we will pick you up at your hotel and transfer you to the train station in Ollantaytambo, a journey of about 1 hour and 30 minutes. During the trip, you might see the Sacred Valley of the Incas, farmland, and majestic snow-capped peaks. In Ollantaytambo, you’ll board the train that will take you to km 104, a journey of approximately 1 hour. At Km 104 (2,200 masl / 7,217 ft.), we will begin our hike, crossing the bridge over the Urubamba River, also known as Willkamayuc, which means “Sacred River” in Quechua. Upon reaching the checkpoint, you’ll need to show identification documents such as a Passport or Certificate of Alien Registration and National Identity. A 15-minute walk will bring us to the archaeological sites of Choquesuysuy and Chachabamba, hidden in the semi-tropical forest. After visiting these sites, we will begin an ascent, observing the Sacred Valley, waterfalls, and various types of orchids in the semi-tropical forest. After a 4-hour hike, we’ll reach Wiñaywayna (2,650 masl / 8,694 ft.), a perfect example of Inca farming with numerous circular terraces where the Incas cultivated different crops. The name “Wiñaywayna” comes from a beautiful orchid in the area, meaning “Forever Young” in Spanish. The site has over 20 buildings, including the “Temple of the Iris Rainbow,” also known as the Temple of Fertility. After a 1-hour visit, you’ll enjoy a lunchbox to refuel before continuing to the Wiñaywayna control point. In the second part of the journey, we’ll walk for two hours along an Andean road, stone staircases, and resting places until we reach Inti Punku - “Sun Gate” (2,720 masl / 8,923 ft.), which served as an access control point to Machu Picchu during the Inca era. From here, you’ll have a breathtaking panoramic view of Machu Picchu and the surrounding valley. We’ll then descend for about 30 minutes to Machu Picchu (2,490 masl / 8,169 ft.) and finally take a bus to “Aguas Calientes” - Machu Picchu Pueblo (2,160 masl / 7,086 ft.), a 25-minute trip. Here, we’ll spend the night in a hostel. If you’re not too tired, you can visit the hot springs, a 5-minute walk from the village, for a cost of 10 soles. For those who enjoy nightlife, “Aguas Calientes” offers a variety of bars and restaurants, as well as an ATM for withdrawing money. We’ll spend the night in a hostel in “Aguas Calientes.” Duration: 14 hours
