Highlights

D1 Cusco – Lares

D2 Lares (3500m) - Rosas Pata (3305m) - Cochayoc (3745m)

Lares - After a hearty breakfast, we load up the llamas and horses to embark on this new leg of our journey. We descend through the Lares Valley, which leads to the Amazon rainforest. The balcony path provides us with a stunning view of the river below. Our day continues with a climb to the village of Rosas Pata, a small settlement overlooking the Rio Lares valley. Following a beautiful balcony path, we make our way to the Cochayoc valley, home to a village whose name means “the village with a lake” in Quechua. Most of its residents are shepherds, giving us the chance to get close to herds of llamas, alpacas, and sheep.

D3 Cochayoc – Pampa Wasi (4200m) - Pisaq pass (4550m) - Challwacocha (4280m)

Lares - In the morning, weather permitting, we will enjoy a breathtaking view of the Terijuay range. We walk through the pastures of Cochayoc to the Cuypan pass (4550m). We continue to a place called Pisaq before ascending to the pass of the same name. The climb is somewhat challenging, but the view is worth it. We stop near a lagoon where our hosts are, and where we will spend the night. From there, we can see several snow-capped peaks. The community of Challhuachoca remained difficult to access for a very long time, and even today, the residents communicate with the valley via radio!

D4 Challwacocha (4280m) – Patacancha (3350m)

Patacancha Valley - After breakfast, we continue to the bottom of this valley and cross another village of shepherds. This one is slightly larger than the others, and the children greet us as we pass. We then head towards the Yauricunca pass (4152 m) before descending to Patacancha. The climb to the pass is gradual, taking us through a landscape of steppes dotted with herds of alpacas. Once we arrive in Patacancha, we meet the community with whom we will spend the evening. Overnight with a local family.

D5 Patacancha (3350m) - Pumamarca - Ollantaytambo (2750m) - Aguas Calientes (2040m)

Ollantaytambo - After breakfast, you bid farewell to the people of Patacancha. You depart by vehicle to the site of Pumamarca, which you will visit. From there, you descend back to Ollantaytambo, where you will take the train to Aguas Calientes.

D6 Machu Picchu – Cusco

Santuario Historico de Machu Picchu - At first light, to enjoy Machu Picchu before the crowds arrive, you take the shuttle or the collective bus to the entrance of the site for a complete tour of the lost city of the Incas, including its agricultural sectors, urban areas, and incredible mountainside constructions. In the afternoon, you descend to Aguas Calientes to take the train to Ollantaytambo, followed by a transfer to Cusco.
