- Kim Bong Carpentry Village - Kim Bong Carpentry Village is not only a place that preserves the traditional customs and attire of Hoi An, but it is also regarded as the birthplace of today’s generations of craftsmen. Alongside Thanh Ha Village and Tra Que Village, Kim Bong Village stands as a testament to the vibrant, enduring, and prosperous land of Hoi An, the ancient capital of Vietnam in the 16th century.
With its strategic location and accessible community, Kim Bong Carpentry Village was once a bustling market and a hub for many foreign merchants during the feudal era.
Today, the village maintains its traditions and advances its sculpture techniques, which are considered the village’s “specialty.” The allure of Kim Bong as a tourist destination lies in the intricate craftsmanship of its products and the rich history of this ancient village. Visitors from all over are eager to explore the pastoral beauty of nature and the skilled artisans’ delicate handiwork.
-
Cam Kim Island - Cam Kim Island is the second-largest island on the Thu Bon River, located south of Hoi An Ancient Town. Here, visitors can experience serene villages, rice fields, vegetable gardens, and craft workshops. The best way to explore this rural area is by riding a motorbike with a local Ao Dai Lady Rider and visiting local households to learn about their daily lives. It is undoubtedly one of the most breathtaking non-touristy activities in Hoi An.
-
Thanh Ha Pottery Village - The pottery craft in Thanh Ha, which thrived in the 16th and 17th centuries, has significantly influenced Hoi An’s history. Thanh Ha bricks and tiles played a vital role in shaping Hoi An’s ancient architecture. These pottery products are also a unique product of Quang Nam, essential for creating household items. Many skilled artisans from Thanh Ha have contributed to the architecture of the royal buildings in Hue.
Beyond pottery-making, the villagers have preserved a rich system of folk knowledge and specialized terminology related to their craft. These cultural values are actively preserved and showcased in the village’s tourism activities, allowing visitors to appreciate the traditional craft. Thanh Ha pottery was included in the national intangible cultural heritage list in 2019.
- Tra Que Vegetable Village - Tra Que is a small village located 3km north of Hoi An’s Old Town, situated between the De Vong River and Tra Que alga pond. Thanks to the special conditions of rich soil and water, the village has long been renowned for growing various vegetables: lettuce, salad, houttuynia, flagrant knotweed, basil, and coriander, which have contributed to the fame of Hoi An’s traditional specialties.
Visitors are captivated by observing the farming procedures of local farmers, including raking the ground, sowing, watering, picking vegetables, and many other activities rarely seen in modern daily life. Moreover, tourists can listen to discussions about organic farming techniques and try their hand at actual farming. The farmers use a type of algae found only in a lagoon in Tra Que instead of chemicals or fertilizers. Thanks to this technique, Tra Que herbs and vegetables are widely recognized for their quality, safety, and especially their outstanding taste and flavor.
- Bay Mau Coconut Forest - This is one of the most popular ecotourism sites in Hoi An City. It evokes memories of places in the southwestern area with its fresh air, expansive green coconut forest, and leisurely, peaceful boat rides.
The forest is located in Cam Thanh commune, near Cua Dai Bridge, about 4 km from Hoi An city. The name Bay Mau was given because this nipa palm forest originally covered an area of about 7 acres (Bay Mau). Currently, the coconut forest area has expanded significantly, yet the name Bay Mau remains.
During the resistance war, the forest area served as an important base for the Vietnamese army and people. The lush green coconut trees, stretching across the river, unintentionally became a shield to protect villagers and soldiers during wartime.
Over time, with the strong development of tourism in Hoi An, the coconut forest has become an attractive eco-tourism destination. It is said that more than 200 years ago, people brought coconut varieties from the southwestern region of Vietnam to Hoi An.
