This camp acted as a prototype for subsequent concentration camps and a ‘training ground for brutality’ for the SS men in charge. Throughout the span of twelve years, over 200,000 individuals from across Europe were incarcerated here and in its many ancillary camps, with 41,500 being executed. The remaining survivors were set free by American soldiers on April 29, 1945.
