Sogui at his best - November 2018 we, two couples, travelled through Senegal for an ample 3 weeks. Although our main aim was birding, we expressly also wanted to get to know the country and its people. So we travelled far and wide, and visited nature reserves and cities alike. Sogui was our guide during this trip. He did his best to make our stay as pleasant as possible, trying to accommodate our wishes and improvising when needed. But he was also a proud Senegalese, keen to show us his country, the bright sides, such as during an impromptu visit along the road to an elementary school chock full of children who welcomed us with a song; but also the not so bright sides, such as when he showed us an obviously poor fishing village where children live among the boats and garbage, with no indication of any schooling being available to them. Such an attitude, which not just seeks to please tourists but also shows them the country for what it really is, is rare among guides. But it makes your stay unique, in that you meet a lot of people and find yourself in a lot of situations that give you ample pause for thought. That way, tourism becomes an enriching experience, not just a pass time. If this is the kind of experience you seek, learning to know the county and its people, then Sogui is your man. And on top of that, he is good company!
